How the fuck does a suburban upper middle class kid with a BMW relate to some guy from the hood who potentially knows no dad and has a prostitute for a mom? What exactly do you have to be angry about? How much drug dealing have you seen? How many drive-bys have you been a part of? How many friends have you lost to violence? Try driving your 335 down the streets of compton bumping your hip hop with your hat turned to the side and see how well received you are LOL I dont think you will garner a lot of respect from the people in the areas where hip hop was born. Oh, BTW, hows France in the summer?

Who the hell is talking about ''relating?" Why must one have to relate with EVERYTHING we listen to. Sometimes its just all about the beat. Why do you think the industry has done so damn well. NOT BECAUSE WE ALL RELATE. Figure it out. I've caught my parents listening to hip hop and the like to. Trust me when I say it, they are ''upper crust.'' Its because we like how it sounds. Recent hip/hop hasnt even mostly been about angry stuff. Drive down a street blasting Mozart, you'll get looks too. Who cares. You're just upset that he nailed it right on the head. Have you ever watched a gangster movie. Lets say "Untouchables" or "Casino." Why watch it? Its not like were part of teamsters. In the end, you wont have to get it. People like Jay Z, 50 Cent, Eminem, P.Diddy, ICE Cube, Dre. Dre, Russell Simmons, etc. will continue to make rake in 9 figures. Yes, nine, XXX,XXX,XXX. They know their target audience and how to market it. Quote:

I just wanted to see how smart some of you are. How good of an argument you guys can make. I saw some good, and I saw some not so good. You did a good job until the end when you started quoting target audiences, etc. When NWA and the other pioneers created this type of music, I highly doubt that young, upper middle class teens was their target. Their music spoke with anger and frustration at the lives they had to live while others drove fancy cars and lived in nice safe neighborhoods, in big houses, and not getting fucked with by the police. This music was born on the back of those much less fortunate than you. I hope that you keep that front and center as you enjoy what they have created. Well, Im out! Enjoy your thread, and thanks for the good times! Peace!

In the new Reef the Lost Cauze album, A Vicious Cycle, someone makes a statement at the end of a song saying that getting into the game is like finding out there is no Santa Clause. People don't really go around carrying 10k in their pockets, they don't really kill dudes on a nightly basis, etc.
Hip Hop shouldn't always be taken literally. Its basis is the mastery of language and the crafting of metaphors, hooks, bars, etc. No, I didn't grow up in the hood, but I've had my share of struggles and conflicts that I had to overcome, and that's what hip hop stands for: the ability to work through your tough times and come out successful. I'm sure many people can relate to that. |

nope. i love the lyrics. i love the beats. i love everything about underground hip hop. i don't give two shits about what people think when it comes to my taste in music.
i can't say i relate to the lyrics in most of the music i listen to. it's nice when i can, but that's just the icing on top of the cake.

I'm not bashing you for liking rap, because I really don't care. I am using this opportunity more like a probe to examine why people better off like this music so much. |

when i grew up listening to rap it was the early 90's and most only at the time african americans could relate because they talked about everyday situations that was going in the black community but now rap is a little different so now its more of every races neighborhood because u now have more other nationalities rapping, but in 90's no way..
