I am due to collect my F20 Msport 120d in a few weeks, and my dealer has offered me Superguard paint and fabric protection for the new car at a cost of £300! I have had a look on the net and found superguard on eBay for £15! Does or has any one applied a paint protection to their f20? is this easy to do your self? As the dealer is charging way too much.

Services like that offered by the dealer are extremely profitable for the dealer, in other words: a rip-off.

Don't do it. If you want paint protection, that money is much better spent on a professional detailer.

Do it on your own!!!

They will make the product sounds magical for you. Like you will never have to polish your car again. But that's rubbish!! No products on earth can make that happen.

If you wanna do paint protection on your own. Just making sure the product you are using is sealant based, but not polish based.

You can layer sealant and build up the "clear coating". But polish, you are actually removing thin layers on the clear coating.

As others have suggested I would employ a detailing specialist to provide a paint protection.

I would expect to pay around £200 - £300 max depending on the products used.

If they give you an unconditional guarantee for 12 months then go for it.

I bet the Superguard warrantee is full of exclusions and exceptions

Spend a quarter of that amount on a good Car detailer who can give your new car a clay wash and carnauba wax that will protect the paintwork for several months. See the car washing threads for some great advice about washing and keeping it looking good.

A can of general purpose waterproofer spray will stop most damage to fabric seats and trim from occuring. Just as good as those 'Special' fabric treatment like Scotchguard. Just make sure you have all the doors open when you do it.

The bmw protect pack thats being sold by the dealers is available on ebay for about £15 instead of the £399 that they are charging for it.

Ive already tried some on my mercedes to see how it goes on and its beading well and was easy to apply. Im happy with it.

Just making sure you dont think Im trying to infiltrate. I work for TRIBOS coatings www.triboscoatings.com, and we supply a paint protection system in the Marine and automotive industry and yes I and a beamer owner and enthusiast, hence being on here;-)

Im not going to comment on how good supagard is etc however I thought I might offer a couple of points on paint protection that you might like to know to help make your choice.

1) Application is absolutely the key to surface protection woking and lasting

without teaching you to suck eggs, its a bit like painting a wall if you dont do the preparation first the end result is not great. I work in the industry and I would not even think about treating my car without the right tools or training. no matter how good the coating is if its not applied properly it will fail with in a few months if not before. (I stress thats my opinion, but I have done countless hours of test and research;-)

So as F20MAW73 says using a professional is probably a good idea but I dont know how hands you might be.

2) You can always find products like this on the internet as people are binning old stock etc. To be honest you dont know how its been stored etc and where its come from.
If you do know what you are doing you and feel like doing a self apply treatment to protect you paint for £12 I would suggest that you go for a wax treatment instead as polymer treatments can go off etc the wax wont last for 12 months but it will give you a good finish for a few weeks / a month or so

3) Warranty, I have to say I dont know the ins and outs of the supagard warranty however, logically as application is so important to a surface coating lasting I would be really surprised if the warranty would extend to self application of a product bought through a 3rd party seller. I have to stress I dont know what their warranty covers.

Our products have a 3 year warranty and we can ONLY give that as our products are applied by trained and approved applicators with bespoke tools in a controlled environment.

4) On any paint protection read the details on the warranty, there are good and bad products out there, I know some other products give you lifetime guarantees... as long as you top them up every 3 months etc.

At the end of the day you do get what you pay for ;-)

At 15 quid a pop I can apply the entire solution I could apply it 26 times and still be better off than the £399 that the dealer wants.

It's not rocket science applying a hard wax to the surface and 90% of he BMW protect kits are coming from dealers..

I don't get how it costs £385 to apply it to a car.
