Now you got me daydreaming of the 2017 M3/M4 CSL, though they may have to call it KSL (Kohlenstoff Sport Leichtbau)

I do not think that BMW is embracing all things carbon fiber because it is an expensive investment.

It is the opposite.

I do see a BMW set of carbon fiber wheels for about $10000 just because of the insane profit.

I don't see it. $10k is insane for wheels...they'd never sell. These components are set for the masses...the masses don't spend $10k on wheels.

They'd be priced for the market...

Just kidding that is promising to hear. I would love to see real pics of them - not sure if the ones in this thread are photoshops or not.

Did I hear spare wheel? Maybe they can have a comeback and we can call it quits on run flats. I would have zero issues with a cf spare wheel.

HRE is doing fine selling wheels at $2000 a pop, so BMW will do fine as well for $2500 each.

For sure I'm not in that market.

Finally BMW decides to make a badass decision!

Hopefully they're able to prove to authorities that it can carry the loads and damage resistant enough!

I'm an engineer at a test house that specializes in mechanical testing of carbon fiber and composites for the aerospace industry. I can't talk any hard numbers but I will say that I think all the naysayers will be quite surprised when these components come to market. The carbon fiber and composites industry has come a long, long way. CF doesn't shatter like glass, and it typically offers phenomenally better properties than metals (depending on the application).

Regarding curb damage, should you manage to hit them hard enough to get all the way through the clear coat/finishing resin, you would still only be able to damage 1-2 plies worth of carbon at the most. The damage could easily be filled back in with resin and polished back to shine, sure the top weave might be slightly imperfect but it will be very hard to notice. These wheels will have a very large ply count and structural integrity will be unaffected. You'll break suspension bits before you fail one of these wheels.

I can tell you that Carbon wheels deliver the ultimate in performance, rigidity, durability, weight reduction, and most important road feel and connection to the road. Carbon does an amazing job absorbing road bumps and really smooths out the ride. I can only greatly anticipate similar results in a Car and as for potholes my bike wheels have survived serious holes so also reduce bent rims.
