RIP Mac Miller

https://variety.com/2018/music/news/...se-1202932519/

It's not often that the death of a famous person affects me but this one does. My kids started listening to his music in 2011 and I was soon a fan. His music was something that my sons and I could relate to and enjoy together. One of the only few rap artists I still listened to. My sons and I had planned on going to see one of his shows on his tour starting next month.

Thank you Malcom for the gift of your songs and the basis for bonding between my sons and I. R.I.P. young legend.

"To everyone who sell me drugs
Don’t mix it with that bullshit I’m hopin’ not to join the 27 club
just want the coke dealer house with the velvet rug
fuck the world there’s no one else but us."
— Mac Miller, Brand Name (GO:OD AM)

If you like hip hop at all check his stuff out. When he started he was still in high school and rapped about typical teenage stuff but he had a great flow. As time progressed and he he started doing more and more drugs it reflected in his work. A lot of his music has stayed in heavy rotation in my car since 2011.

I see drug related issues every day. Its beyond sad. I'll go so far as to say its hopeless. There is no answer. Nothing works.

In his lyrics he says he didn't want to join the 27 club. He died of an apparent overdose at 26. More talent stolen by drugs and alcohol.

RIP

I'm gonna stir the pot a little bit and post one of his more well-known songs (disclaimer song was not originally meant to be political) :

That's pretty disrespectful. This guy wasn't the typical rapper doing a bunch of drugs because it was the cool thing to do. He had some serious issues he was contending with.

I had a very serious (as in $1200/week) habit when I was younger. This did not make me a bum. Never judge someone for who they are now, people change and become who they are meant to be. I wouldn't consider a 26 year old with 9 million a bum. Does this mean that Michael Jackson was a bum too?

Terrible news, his new album is so good although it didnt get much attention because it dropped same day as astroworld. If you haven't, give it a listen. Miles ahead of any other artist(of the same category) in terms of instrumentals.

Sad I'll never get to hear new music from him, always looked forward to it.

Not big on his donald trump song, maybe my least favorite haha. Listen to self care, hurt feelings, 2009, ladders off his new album. Sound great if you have a solid pair of headphones.

Got it the day it dropped. I have to agree. listening to his style change over the years has been enjoyable.

I never equated drugs with being a bum. He wasn't what I'd call an upstanding member of society.

He's my age, I can call him a bum all I want.

I've seen his MTV show, but never really heard his music.

I don't get it with these guys. It's a stupid way to go. They have money and time to get help, go to rehab and get away from the a-holes that are feeding you this shit. Hire a chaperone to make sure you don't fuck up. I mean, come on... There's no excuse for this. It really pisses me off. Scott Weiland is a great example. When I heard he OD, I was literally mad for a while. I love STP and I know he had his issues and got sober, but relapsed. It's crazy...

I lol'ed so hard at this. Poor rich rapper with serious issues....lmao.
Another bum bites the dust. Sorry, my opinion.

Was he a veteran fighting ptsd
Was he broke through no fault of his financial irresponsibility and family facing eviction
Was he orphaned and raised as a sex slave
Was he a witness to a series of heinous murders as a child and has been haunted and on the run from the murderers all his life
Does he have a special needs disability that prevented him from functioning in society
Did his father or male relatives rape him multiple times as a child
Did he lose a close loved one like a child, wife or mom/dad during a vulnerable moment in life
Was he suffering from a terminal medical condition for which there was severe medical bills and impending prognosis

Those in my opinion are examples of real issues to be dealing with. A quick research into his life shows no signs of childhood trauma or exposure to psychological or physical abuse or any known birth defects that would have caused him to have compatibility issues with society.
So to me, he's just another loser that couldn't maturely handle fame and fortune. Cool dude maybe, nice music sure, positive influence that I would let my kids model, f*ck no.
Do I care he's gone, no. My day does not change. Sorry for his family's lost.

Two Pittsburgh rappers down - this leaves us only Wiz.

Honestly didn't know who he was until the last rap boy died.

RIP Mac...

All else aside; I tend to think the people that do these things at that level are losers. They are millionaires who live a high profile life; have a ton of resources available to them, a wealth of fans and instead of looking for help they end it... I think Hollywood and the entire celebrity scene is truly filled with a bunch of attention seeking losers.

That's true, you can say whatever you like; however let's consider the individual you're talking about, he was a musician/rapper....not the pope. I would go as far as to say most musicians are far from being pillars of the community.

Valid points? Absolutely. However, depression is depression regardless of the source. From someone who battled depression for years it doesn't matter where the source stems, depression is depression. Just because he was rich or didn't deal with any of the aforementioned issues didn't mean that he didn't deal with it. I dealt with the same judgement when I suffered from depression. It was hard for people to understand how someone who was in a better financial situation than most could be so depressed. Nice house, car and debt free but but I couldn't seem to shake it. I heard "grow up, just snap out of it", etc. but those that don't understand simply don't understand.

In my experience those that have dealt with situations like what you have posted above tend to be more well adjusted than those who don't; I speak from experience as I personally have PTSD. Some are mentally strong and able to adjust and some are not. I would go as far as to say it depends on the individual not the situation.

I agree. I felt the same way with Scott Weiland and Layne Staley as well. It's hard not to have some form of emotional involvement when a musician falls into this category. We go through seasons of our lives listening to certain musicians and years later when we hear these songs it magically transports us back in time to relive memories of what our lives were like at that time. So yes when a musician that we feel like we have a connection with dies needlessly it's hard not to feel some form of an emotion about it.

Again, no trying to argue anyone's opinion on this as everyone is entitled to theirs and I see your points and honestly I agree. I guess my take on all this is focused more on mental illness than anything else.

I thought the same thing. I'm sure she is quite upset. No doubt that she cared deeply for him but I also understand her stance on leaving him. It's hard to care about someone and watch their decline first hand. At some point you have to cut ties and allow people to do what they are going to do if you can't do anything to help them.
