f20 irritating noise from rear suspension area

Does anyone have problem with annoying bumping noise which is coming from rear suspension area when you are driving on slightly bumpy roads? I took the car to bmw garage, but they found nothing. Any idea, solution?

Hey. maybe you've got some shit or something from the muddy winter roads in the suspension or rear wheels. Try to wash thoroughly with high pressure washer.

This problem is a well known one in german BMW forums.
BMW is working on this problem, but there isn't a final solution yet.

You can have a look at this thread (it's in german, but you could run it through Google Translator):

I hope my english isn't too bad.

Thanks for the link, Mammut. Good to know that it's a known problem (I have it too).

This might sound silly, had the same issue to find it was only the parcel shelf not 'clicked' all the way in so was 'bumping' up and down over speed humps.

Hi, problem has been solved, i put on summer 17 inch wheels (225/45/17) last weekend and suddenly the noise disappeared. Quite interesting. Winter wheels are 16 inch (205/55/16).

I had the same thing, it was the person i had bound and gagged in the boot.

I let them out, and life is good again.

Guys, it's the knocking sound of the rear seats against the pivot holder. Normally it happens more often if you have someone seated at the back.

Solution to that is to tape the "U" catch with thick velcro tapes so that the seats does't "slide" around bends or humps.

Time needed is less than 5 mins. Don't waste your time in the service centre.

+1

I've also been looking for this sound for a while, so some visual insight would be appreciated.

I had this sound as well. I went to the dealer, one of the machanics made a test drive with me and agreed that this sound was not OK. I could pick up my car at the end of the day again. Issue solved: new rear shock absorbers were placed. Since then I have not heard this noise anymore.

Hey thanks forrestgum, it works on my F20! Finally solved an issue which has been buggering me for the past year.

I brought my car to the BMW service centre in Hong Kong 3 times already and they couldn't figure out where the problem lies.

Good that it works for you. Of course I can't say that all the rear noise are from the same source but this is one known noise that I have discovered.

It's obvious from the textual description: the black loop at the upper right, where the backrest gets fixed. (I don't upload the picture because it's obvious , but as you see all important pictures should be put on this site to persist!)
