Tuning for 118i

I'm considering tuning my F20 118i - What is available that is also safe. I'm not looking for MAX Power - but an improvement would be great.

Cheers,
Zender

First you have to decide if you want to keep the factory warranty. In that case, you can select tuning from a company connected to BMW. This is rather expensive.

If you don't care about warranty, there are plenty of cheaper chip tuners out there that promise higher gains.

At the moment, there are kits (tuning boxes) from Hartge and Kelleners with similar output (around 205bhp). Both companies are reputable BMW tuners.

Thanks Gents, I'll take a look at both. Sounds like there aren't too many providers as yet. Not sure if I'll hold off until we get a few more tunes available. Have any of your done a tune on the F20?

Well, how is it feels? (Have u done maybe some dyno testing?)
How much did you pay for it ? (If you don't mind im asking).
And , did you get at some authorized Hartge dealer at your country (Greece) ?

Thanks.

Here are the answers:

1. I installed the tuning box in my 116i, only for a few weeks, to test the box and have some feedback. The Hratge dealer in Greece is a member of the BMW forum in Greece (in which I am a moderator), so I did it as a favour to him and also I was curious to see how the car feels. Here is my review: http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=54

The car felt like I was driving a 118i...the difference is noticable mainly on higher speeds and acceleration for example from 100km/h to 180km/h. The car definetely felt faster. I have not done any dyno, but we did the following:
- Tested with another 116i (same configuration as my car) and I was faster from 60km/h to 160km/h
- Hooked it up to a portable diagnostic while we sere driving. Max boost with out the box was 0.5bar, and with the box it was 0.79bar.
- Took some acceleration readings with a vBox (GPS system that measures acceleration) and in various acceleration readings the car with the box was between 1'' to 4.5'' faster (we did not perform the 80-180km/h).

2. I did not pay, as I have not installed it (now it is out of the car). The RRP in Greece is 1.500 Euro....I do not know the price in other European countries.

3. Yes. There is only one authorized Hartge dealer in Greece (www.speedandstyle.gr) and I went there.

I did not make a measurement of the 0-100 km/h time, since measuring time from standstill is very tricky and can be highly affected by other factors.

What if you use a performance meter application like Racechrono, using the speed data from the car by bluetooth from the OBD2 plug? That should be fairly accurate.

I guess the biggest problem is to make a consistent launch for the driver. Maybe easier with automatic transmission and DSC enabled.

I do not have an OBD reader. I tried a few apps on the iphone (like Dyno and M Power Meter) but the results where not accurate nor consistent.

The biggest problem as you say is the launch of the car. Even on same tarmac (I have auto box), the DSC sometimes intervenes more than other times, so it cuts more power or for longer period.

bmw f20 118i from 170 hp to 240 hp without any harmfor th engine with kipping factory warranty, this stuff goes with any engine not n13b16 only first you should know whats ur city fuel grade second search on racechip.com and buy the chip and it will be in the factory mode thats will be 20% x 170 = 204 hp , and then open the chip for the fine tuning but wait !! do not go with the fine tuning and start to rise the level of power without knowing the fuel grade its so important if u open the chip and open boost and ignition timing and injection without a minimum fuel grade of 98 the check engine light will appear on the idrive
my city the max fuel RON is 92 if u like to know how to tune with the engine tell me
have a good time if any thing else you want to know please tell me thnq
