Chris Harris Drives the M135i vs. A45 AMG

Quote:
Stuttgart v Munich in the battle of the super hatches. Includes road, track, lap times, standing start acceleration. And sheep. And a little jump.
The M135i review will give a good preview of what to expect from the upcoming M235i coupe.

Good review. Both cars are great and very different. It's obvious in the video how the AMG is a full out AMG while the M135i is more of a super hatchback at a bargain deal.

This leaves me a bit worried with the M235i vs CLA45 AMG here in the USA.

The CLA 45 AMG starts at 47.5k I believe with no options (DCT standard). For the M235i to be a bargain it should stay around 41-42K range with no options.

If it starts at more, it's not as good as a bargain.

Chris Harris is by far the best automotive journalist.

Second would be Micah Muzio or Carlos Lago.

As good as the AMG A45 is mechanically, Chris Harris didn't seem too enthusiastic about it. He gave it it's due and that was that. Switch to the M135i, he sounded like a kid in a candy shop - he couldn't get over how fun it was. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I actually like the A45 exterior over than M135i.

Some light weight wheels with cup tires on that AMG should do wonders.

Looks like the first M135i mods would be a limited slip diff and better rear subframe bushings.

What do you mean? He said if he had the money he would pick the AMG. I am the biggest BMW fanboi but I think I would pick the AMG as well.

I called this already. Now, we just need harris monkey to do the a45 vs. the 1m coupe......lets all flood his inbox on youtube.

HE is the only reviewer to actually say hey, this is a TRUE AMG car and this is NOT an M car. Lets get that out of the way.

Good review.

Don't think either car is for me, but I enjoyed it all the same.

I know he would've picked the AMG if he had the money but watch the video again, Chris was never really enthusiastic talking about the A45 AMG. Then when he was in the M135, his tone was totally different, excited to talk about how it was great having a BMW straight-six, the ZF 8-Speed, RWD. I'm not arguing which one he would buy, just noting that he might be liking the M135i a bit more. I think would pick the A45 AMG too because I find it to be a better all rounder. If the M135i had a better looking exterior, I might be more in favour of the M135i.

Sorry, without sounding like a huge fanboy, the 1M would win. You could try to have a discussion between the two but I think it would be an extremely short discussion. Fun to watch but I think most of us would know which would come out on top.

Good review... I like the little 1 hatch, I bet they would sell like hotcakes here in the US, I see the A3 everywhere.

One another note, I caught a couple of new C Class Mercs on the 405 yesterday along with the new CLA and S Class... Its surprising how much smaller the C & S Class look compared to the current models. They seemed wider but shorter.

BMW -ugly headlamps
A45 -super ugly tail lights

But, in the BMW you don' t see those ugly holes for screws that are visible on the Merc's steering wheel. It's all about litle details that should justify the price...

... interior wise BMW rules.

Now, thinking about how much rust I can see on the Mercedes lately (premium car?) my choice is obvious.

Great review!
I dont get y he is praising the gearbox in the Aamg, maybe the new dual clutch is a lot better than the current CLSamg(rubbish)

for people who buy A45 because money is not an issue, they should get a SLS isntead :P

Hot Hatches need to be cheap and fun, if they pushing the price range of proper sports car (cayman etc), its missing the point. he said "M135i is still the sports car bargain of the century" and "M135i is a baby supercar"

another point, the cabin in A45 looks immature for me. to flashy (whats up with that red seatbelts) but maybe some people like em.

nevertheless thumbs up for CH!

EVO mag verdict

Oh i know the 1m would blow it away (already posted that in the thread w. amg vs notsoM vs golf). Its time to show the amg what a proper m car could do thats why.
