1st week

My silver 118dA F20 is one week and 525 miles old replacing a Passat 3C. I'm really pleased with the indicated economy but will wait till its been brimmed again before awarding a medal.
The initial Passat (170ps , automatic) consumption was 44,7 & it averaged 43.6 over it’s 70000 miles.
Comparing the two –
Ride & refinement - both very similar
Convenience – once inside the F20 doesn’t seem any smaller but it’s certainly not as easy to get in & out of (even in the front) as the Passat but we can’t downsize & win them all!
Ergonomics – I’ve yet to find a seat/steering combination that lets me readily see both the cruise control setting and the outside temperature through the wheel.
The Passat with it’s extra lever for the cruise control was much more convenient than my previous Volkswagens but the F20 is better; almost has a mind of it’s own knowing when to change from 70 to 50 or back again with a single push – or am I imagining this/.
Night driving – I don’t miss the Xenons at all – glad I saved the money. Initially found the i-drive very distracting, but reset to be much dimmer it’s fine.
Tyres – was surprised to find it’s got Korean tyres (expected German Conti or Dunlop) – it’s too early to attempt to assess wear or grip but they’re certainly not excessively noisy. Wonder what make the winter ones will be when they arrive.

That's interesting for me, I too have a 2 year old Passat CR TDi DSG that I bought from new and do 18k miles a year in.

My wife has a 116i on order and my plan is to do 6k of my miles in it and cut down the Passat's mileage to 12k a year.

My commute is early morning and early afternoon motorway and A roads and I average 50mpg in the Passat, bit more in summer, bit less in winter.
The cruise control in the Passat is one of it's best features in my opinion, the ability to preset speed then engage and jump in single units or in 5's etc is excellent. It's good to know the BMW's system is just as good if not better.
Ride was very important to my wife which is why we went with an SE with 16" non run flats but with sports seats and sports steering wheel etc. Yep it is a lot lower to get in and out of than the Passat but I'm sure she will be OK

Cheers
Lee

Ours is 16" non-run flats too - not just for the ride, but I wanted a better choice when it comes time to replace them.

Just filled up.
Warning came on with range at exactly 50 miles
Brim to brim it's 53.8mpg although the car computer showed 57.7

You can look at this from another perspective
not so long ago a V8 had similar acceleration times as you get from a BMW 4 pot now
The V8 floated like a boat and handled like a bucket of bolts
The V8 would get at best 16 mpg and you are getting 53.8mpg and the 1er handles fantastically

Lucky 'us', we get the performance, the fun and the ecco to boot
