Auto Stop/Start memory function (software update).

So I went in to my dealer yesterday after having the car in for some warranty servicing.

We all know about the software update which adds memory function to the Auto Start/Stop. Meaning the system remembers your last setting (on or off) instead of defaulting to on.

I was shocked to be quoted 1 hour programming labour @ $240 !?

They must be having a laugh...

Don't think I'd pay for that feature.

I'd like to know where we stand with software updates (not media) while under warranty.

Should we be entitled to free updates?

I think so.

It's basic functionality and not really adding anything in terms of a higher spec or performance etc. If it worked smoothly and didn't shake the car when starting then I (and I assume many other owners) wouldn't mind living with it. Yes - it's only a press of the button, but it's annoying and I see no reason why Last User Mode isn't activated by default.

After my experience with my Cooper S and other BMW vehicles I've come to the conclusion that the dealer network in Sydney sucks. They really couldn't give a shit about existing owners unless you're there for a new purchase. Most of the service managers I've dealt with come across as complete wankers.

Shame... because I love the marque.

In Norway the dealers insist that we need to have the start/stop feature activated by default. It has to do with emissions. Without the system, the car would pollute slightly more, and then we should have to pay slightly more tax for the car...

From what I understand it is country and sometimes even dealer-specific. My dealer informed that any software upadates under warranty are free, whereas a friend was informed by a different dealer, that only campaign updates are free and all other updates have to be paid by the customer.

That is of course if you inform the authorities...otherwise they would not know, so they won't charge you extra.

But the dealers will not do something illegal.

But they will fit an x20d with the Power Kit without reporting it. They basically just make you promise that you will report it yourself. Nobody ever does, and the dealers know this.

Call the dealer and say the start stop isn't working properly. Tell them it's not working when it should or it's not restarting all the time or something. Surely then it's a warranty claim and no doubt their simple fix approach will be to do a software update. If they try to charge just argue that it was intermittently faulty.

Sometimes you need to bend the truth a little to get what you want.

tbh, i've read the manual and i find the behaviour of the stop start jobbie perplexing still

i assume it's down to temperature, seatbelt, moon-phase etc... therefore, this is not a bad plan!!

That's exactly what they told me as well when I asked them to "disable it by default".

Wonder if this software comes to Norway too?
Should be possible with a memory function for the Driver Experience button as well!

i had a free software update yesterday, well they did it because the service indicator was out of wack though. Indicated front brakes to be replaced in 2900km and now its in 17000km.
