Adaptive Headlights with High-Beam assist

Hey Guys,

I was looking through a few threads on the F30 section of the forum and read that the new F30 system has a much more variable adaptive headlight system with high-beam assist (Not a 2 option system anymore). Is the system the same for the F20 where each individual headlight adjusts to the situation of the light sensor?

Reference: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showth...highlight=beam

Thanks!

In the F20, the adaptive headlights seem to follow the steering wheel. The high-beam-assist is controlled by a camera by the rear view mirror. It works very well.

Agreed, works very well. To me it was worth the money as I drive across the Pennines (UK), everyday and when it gets dark its pitch black on windy roads.

I could not agree more, hence why I added these options to my build. The only thing I am trying to ascertain is if the system works in a similar manner to the F30.

I just checked the manual and it is a bit vague, it says depending on the version fitted it maybe that the high beam is not switched off for oncoming vehicles, but only the areas that dazzle the oncoming vehicles are faded out. in this case the blue indicator light continues to be illuminated.

so the answer is it might be like the F30 forum describes...

My experience is that the high beam is switched off when there is oncoming traffic (or sometimes very bright road signs), and back on when the road is free. I have not seen any area fading.

So a bit of an update:

The light distribution is automatically adapted to the speed when you have adaptive headlights. The city light is active as of a speed of less than 50km/h (30mph). The motorway light is switched on at a speed higher than 110km/h (68mph) after approximately 30 seconds or as of a speed of 140km/h (87mph).

When the car is stationary the cornering lights does not swivel to the driver's side when stationary.

When reversing, only the cornering light is active and illuminates the zone on the outside of the bend.

The high-beam assistance is different to previous BMW models, it has the ability to beam headlights on and off OR fades out the areas which dazzle oncoming vehicles.

Guiding fog lights will only activate up to a speed of 110km/h (68mph).

Reference: Page 85 of owners manual

So in answering my own question, the F20 has the same system as the F30. Hehe!

NICE!

Are you sure? Has anyone already tried the highbeam assist?

Because in the German pricelist for the F30 the high-beam assist is called "blendfrei" in combination with the adaptive lights.

But in the F20 pricelist, the "blendfrei" function is not mentioned.

According to the BMW manual that is what it says. I will however be able to confirm this coming week though when I take delivery.

I was using the high beam assist last night and it appeared to work the same as the one in my e91.

Turns on when the road is clear and the blue symbol goes off with oncoming traffic .

That is my impression too. I have been using the high beam assist, and I have not noticed these pattern changes you see in the video. I have been driving mostly on narrow and winding roads, though.

My f20 definitely does not have that variable pattern like others have said, it is either full lights or dims there is no in-between.

Just stalking you 1Addicts and I see you guys have found my thread! I have updated it if you care to look again.
Unfortunately, I can't say if the F20 has this fantastic feature or not. The posts above don't look promising!

Hey SomeRandomer123,

I am hoping that the F20 has this feature. I am just wondering if you need to have adaptive headlights + xenons + High-Beam for this feature to work as you have posted. Looking at your thread the only way to get the lights to move left and right is with adaptive headlights.

I really am hoping that it is something that I won't be cursing the BMW Manual about for getting me all excited and wishing I bought an F30

The f30 does indeed have a different beam assist to the f20, i know this as i have both. The f30 has a more advanced variable high beam to the f20. The f30 high beam moves dependent on oncoming or approaching other vehicles, the f20 will just switch to dipped beam.

Can VDL on M135i with AHL and HBA be coded retrospectively

Had a ride in an f30 with adaptive xenon headlights (AHL) and high beam assist (HBA) recently.

Impressed with Variable Light Distribution (VDL) which is "smart" HBA.

Am aware the f22 2series has a similar smarter HBA to F30 3 series.

Can the smarter HBA / VDL be coded onto a 1 series if fitted with AHL & HBA ??
