I kind of like it. I love the idea of a small but roomy 5 door.

I like it. It's about time BMW has something to give the Audi A3 a run.

This thing has a mouse face for a front end, and a pigs butt for a back. I really do not like how the hood connects to the front pillar! It looks very bulky, and cumbersome.

Looks like the baby you get If a F11 rapes a Mercedes A-class.

Scott, will it come in four wheel drive? Or will that ruin the legroom-concept?

It's the first sporty looking MPV i've ever seen. I like it much better then an ordinary MPV that simply could not fit into the BMW product portfolio. BMW "caravelle" anyone?
Good!

Nah dude, it's all good, the only thing that matters is that extra leg room.

And look what BMW brought us with the extra cash they rake in on those "SUV"s.... they don't even take the time to develop a "S" motor for M cars anymore.

So BMW makes all this money now from going more and more mainstream, yet they don't change one piece of hardware related to the engine on the new 1M, what is being touted as the "Ultimate Driving Machine" and a Motorsport vehicle.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, but so far things have been going downhill in my eyes.

So you would rather be in the family of Fiesta's, Focuses, Windstars, F-150's, Tauruses, Contours, Escapes, Edges, Flexes, and anything besides the 5.0 or GT?

Am I the only one that finds that halarious?

First off, I dont like the design, I dont like Front wheel drive, nor do I really care about megacity, eco, or passenger oriented vehicles. BUT, I do LOVE and value my M3, I loved my previous M3s, and even non-M BMWs I've owned.

With that said, BMW NEEDS to make money. While its so easy for us to sit back and criticize the decisions being made to offer these small, FF vehicles and non performance oriented vehicles, BMW is fighting one heck of a difficult battle against the likes of audi and MB.

Unlike BMW, Audi has an incredible amount of resources at its disposal. Technology, information, parts, and MONEY are shared amongst the parent company VW. Audi's family is very big. Audi is part of a 10 BRAND family including VW, Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, to name a few.

Whereas BMW only has BMW, Mini, and license to Rolls Royce.

BMW does not have 16-20k eco cars like VW does that are insane money makers for VW and in return fund Audi to make cars that will eventually kick BMWs ass. Nor does BMW have insanely HIGH profit yielding vehicles that Porsche does as the highest profit margin auto maker in the world.

So, do you want BMW to start charging you $150,000 for an M3? Do you want BMW to lose in the long run against Audi due to lack of funds and resources? Or would you rather they make a new "money maker" segment like eco FF passenger cars to fund the development of the enthusiast cars we REALLY like??

I'm all for it. BMW, make what you have to make, weather it be ugly, front wheel drive, whatever... as long as you make enough money to afford to make the badass cars you are known for making, without having to water them down or passing high cost over to your loyal clients.

Bravo on your efforts to do it on your own, instead of merging or selling the BMW brand to a bigger company to survive.
Sometime people can't see the bigger picture.

I can see the bigger picture, trust me. I just honestly feel like this is a slipperly slope...and a potential loss of brand identity, which has taken a long time to build.

I'll buy an accord or camry long before I'll touch that.

BMW reliability for a sub 40K car- will be horrendous.

I said the same thing on the first page...I mean the GTI would be at least 5 grand cheaper...and no RWD dynamics to justify the price premium for the BMW...

+1

It is adapt or die. BMW is attempting to adapt and grow it's volume. It will have to do so or be absorbed by another larger corporation.

So if it is a choice of a FWD BMW Hatch or BMW being bought out by VW. I'll take the option of BMW producing a FWD Hatch. That does not mean I will buy it. However I understand the need for it to fill a niche and add to BMW's overall sales volume to have BMW remain an independent company.

So you're not mad that BMW is making this vehicle, you're just mad that they will make it a 1er?

And still, if by "in the same family" you mean the 1er product line, let me tell you the mustang line isn't anything to brag about RWD or not.

Exactly, BMW is being a copy cat just to try and get fat, with no regard to their history, their roots, and why people love and defend what they were.

Lame.

Yes. I don't want to even be included in that mindset of modular 1 series crap.

The Mustang line IS something to brag about. It is one of the best selling sports car in the world. They have always been cheap, they have always been easy to work on, and they have always been for the driving enthusiast. Even the radical change to the turbo 4-cylinder was well thought out, and that car has a huge cult following today, including many aftermarket parts.

Nowadays, they have become one of the leaders in performance/quality per $. They embrace tuning and motorsports. They wouldn't bring the Mustang down to a FWD, econo-box "Grand Touring" level. The Mustang/Shelby team has a passion, and is why they are so successful today.

It's very easy to make absurd remarks when you don't have an understanding of the current economic climate of the auto industry and where BMW stands within it. If you remotely had any idea the challenges BMW currently faces, you would most likely reconsider your stance and probably not bash them for the challenges they are addressing head on instead of selling out to a bigger Corp.

With that said, your response is mostly emotional rather than logical which is usual considering we are following a brand which has some of the most sincere And passionate fan base.

Um Scott.. when the hell did REAL BMW fans ever care about selling 2 million units? I get it, you make money then keep the enthusiasts happy.

But in my opinion, it should be the opposite.. you know classic, classy bimmer style. You should make the enthusiasts happy (NA, High revving) and then profit from the cars the enthusiasts buy their spouses, and the fun, fuel efficient cars that the rest will purchase.

Stop becoming the GM of Europe. Seriously, it's starting to scare me.
