You are looking at a production car which is 90% what was shown with the concept car. This segment is a popular growth segment and since the concept , BMW has significant interest in this car. So far in Europe where the Active Tourer will be euro centric focused has seen this segment increase by 45%.
Next year projections show a rise up to 60% initially this is when Active Tourer arrives on the market. The two Active Tourers in both five seat and seven seat have been shown to customers and dealers alike and have been to great acceptance. The M Sport packet really brings out the cars style with stylish aeropacket and larger wheels. If rival Mercedes-Benz can sell the B-Klasse to 100,000 units since 2011, BMW has the same ambition. The marketing for this car embodies its use as an activity vehicle for families and for many it could be the second BMW in a typical one BMW household. The Active Tourer will be introduced into the US Market as again BMW can market it as the secondary BMW over a typical domestic or Asian MPV. The Active Tourer will premiere at Geneva 2014.

BMW is in the business of making money for its shareholders. BMW can't afford to only have luxury/premium sports sedans and coupes in their lineup and remain independent as a car maker. Just like any other company, they need to gain market share and that's the key point, other companies like audi, porsche, even ferrari need to live under the umbrella of bigger companies that have enough market share and steady revenue to support its operations and remain competitive.

If you look at Active Tourer from our own perspective and that is in that segment there is no BMW that can offer the amount of space as shown by the Active Tourer. For customers who need that flexibility that will be major choice in selecting this vehicle aside from it being a BMW. Then with the 7 Seat version. We only offer that kind of flexibility with the X5 and I have spoken to customers who cannot reach financially to the X5 but need that kind of flexibility in the segment they have chosen. To add to a regular X1 or X3 will severely compromise passenger and luggage space , so here we can compromise by offering a compact car with space and flexibility for seven passengers. If like me and you have a large family who have their own families then you will understand the need for a more accessible 7 seater concept from BMW. The space on offer in the Active Tourer is highly significant that the next BMW X1 utilises the same modular architecture but with different positioning of firewall, cradle and suspension mounts to develop the car as an SAV.

Mercedes sells more B Class models than A Class models, so for sure it's a large market here.
Let's not forget VW which sells tons of Tourans and the other popular manufacturers |

Will this 1er GT make it to the US? Heck I kinda want a 1M GT as a competitor to the EU A45, which will never be in US... |

But meanwhile the mini's look cool, this f*** up 1GT, well, it's not the best looking GT BMW ever made. I mean, next to a 5 series GT, the 1GT will make seasoned BMW users sick. And the 5GT isn't exactly a looker to begin with. I'm sure it will sell, and do BMW good, but couldn't they made it look at least half decent?

This hurts my BMW pride...
Although I think this will complete the lineup for different kind of users, I somehow don't want to share the same badge with some van... And it's FWD. I would go easy on it if it's at least a xDrive van... NOT FWD... oh how it hurts my pride.... And I know Mercedes did that too, but I think they have just discounted the R-series Van in NA. |

I don't really care if BMW produce non-entusiast cars. What troubles me is that the FWD lineup will eventually erase the last existing RWD hatchback from the market. And that is the car I want. So I (and many others like me) will be forced to buy something else. Maybe a Toyota GT86?

Sorry, I know all about progress and all that good stuff...but FWD is ass. My favourite car company ever just keeps disappointing me. The only new things I've seen recently which are even slightly interesting are the i-cars. I was kind of horrified at the death of the NA straight six...wrong-wheel-drive is just twisting the knife.
I was so underwhelmed by my F20 I moved it on less than 1 year into a 3 year lease and went back to driving E34s... |
