Harman Kardon light?

Hi,

I just got my new 118d a few days ago. It has the Harman Kardon option among other stuff.

Does anyone know if the Harman Kardon in F20 is some kind of lesser version than the Harman Kardon in e90 for example?

Reason Im asking is that in my 2011 335i (with HK) i had some equalizer options for the speakers. In my brand new F20 there is no equalizer even though I have HK. By equalizer I mean more than adjusting the tremble and bass level.

It just seems weird to me that there is no equalizer for the best sound option BMW has to offer for the new 1-series.

My dealer explained it like this.

The HK is a bit like M sport in that it is added to the car. It will depend on the setup internally of the main unit fitted to the model.

The HK unit comprises the amps, subs and speakers only, but this is dependant upon the system option you choose. EG if you have the DAB included it has a different main unit to the standard unit and if you have the Pro Nav screen it has more functions.

The equaliser will be there, however it may be preset or accessed through a sub menu.

Go talk to the technical guy from your dealership, this is unless someone on the forum can shed more light on this for us. I am also interested to find out if it is there.

I dont have the DAB option but I do have the navi pro. To be honest I dont see how DAB would effect having an equalizer or not with HK.

Anyone with HK option that has the equalizer?

had f20 118d with hk and no equalizer actually.
overall, slightly disappointed with the system though, sound comes only from front etc. .. at least the option is not so expensive.
also found some discrepancies with the sound, connected to usb y wire, with input volume increasing or decreasing

Besides the lack on an equalizer, you know you can actually balance it front/rear?! Thats something I had to do with basically every BMW I ever had. Adjust the balance a bit more to the rear.

I had the Logic 7 Pro sound system in my e92, this had several sound settings like theatre, stadium etc.... Very nice quality sound... The HK in my f20 is very good in my opinion but I would like a few more options above and beyond the fade balance bass & treble?

As a hifi enthusiast I can live without the equalizer and the artificial sounds from theatre, stadium, church and more. I have it in my Cooper S and finds that the more you do to the sound the more you clutter it

I'm not a real music enthusiast... I just like buttons and settings to fiddle with

Hi All,
In the English/Australian brochure it states that there is a equaliser and suround sound function.
REF: Page 62 'harman/kardon Loudspeaker System (shown here) with powerful digital amplifier featuring an overall output of 360W, equalizer and twelve loudspeakers for superb sound. Surround sound function enables the simulation of various acoustic environments'.
Might pay to check this out with the BMWdealer

I just got my 118i with HK system. There seems to be no equalizer or surround option. So what is the consensus, there is no EQ for Australian models?

Nothing in the manual so I presume it doesn't have it which is mildly annoying.

The F30 does:

It is actually a bit of BS if you ask me! I am hoping BMW will fix this with a software update/upgrade when I take delivery of my car.

BMW *sigh*

So its as I suspected. The F20 HarmanKardon is some sort of light-version of the one in the bigger cars.

This is just BS...

this is from the HK website - I believe the equaliser is automated.

Harman Kardon Premium Surround Sound in the BMW 1 Series

Perfect Entertainment in the Compact Class

Equipped with the Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system, BMW 1 Series models deliver impressively pristine, hi-fidelity sound. Thanks to the intensive cooperation between Harman Kardon and BMW during the design phase, acoustics experts have developed tailor-made solutions for each model. For the sound tuning in the BMW 1 Series, Harman Kardon uses the AuraVox fully automatic equalizing system that adjusts hundreds of parameters via computer. In combination with the subsequent manual fine tuning carried out by acoustic experts, it was possible to substantially improve the overall performance of the system.

The result is impressive – up to twelve high-performance speakers and the powerful DSP multichannel amplifier offer passengers in all seating positions a unique, three-dimensional sound experience.

Unmatched Surround Sound Thanks to Logic 7 Technology
High-quality, carefully combined technical components and the Logic 7 technology of the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System form the basis for the high-fidelity sound experience in BMW 1 series models.

The new BMW 1 Series 5-door is equipped with twelve high-performance speakers. Three metal matrix tweeters have been integrated into the triangular sections at the base of the exterior mirrors, as well as the dashboard, which is also home to one ALumaprene mid-range speaker. Two metal matrix tweeters and ALumaprene mid-range speakers have been built into the C-pillars in the rear and base of the parcel shelf. Two large woofers beneath the driver and passenger seats deliver a powerful bass.

The sound specialists packaged the Harman Kardon Logic 7 DSP amplifier with a peak output of 360 watts on its side in the rear of the car, thus retaining the full surface area of the luggage compartment.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe and 3-door model have two metal matrix tweeters in the mirror triangles at the front, metal matrix mid-range speakers in the front door and a woofer beneath both the driver and passenger seats. Two metal matrix mid-range speakers and two further metal matrix tweeters in the base of the parcel shelf behind the rear outer seats deliver a warm, natural sound. Due to the different bodyshell structure in the cabriolet, Harman Kardon experts positioned the sound transformers in the rear seat area within the rear side trim.

The powerful 300 watts Logic 7 DSP amplifier was placed by Harman Kardon's specialists in the rear of the car, without impacting the usable surface area.

Optimal Sound Tuning with AuraVox
For the sound tuning for the BMW 1 Series, Harman Kardon uses the AuraVox fully automatic equalizing system. It evaluates hundreds of parameters and automatically generates the appropriate filter, corrects running time differences and regulates in advance the optimum volume level of the individual channels. In combination with the individual fine-tuning carried out by tuning engineers, the result is an authentic sound experience that fulfills the high quality standards set by Harman Kardon.

Thanks! After reading that the annoyance of not having an equalizer is almost completley gone. Automatic EQ!

The text is kinda funny also. So much fancy words that dont mean jack

Thanks for the info!

Yes because a computer is going to know "EXACTLY" how each and every individual wants to setup their sound - "AI Audiophiles" what will they think of next?

If you read between the lines it is just a marketing BS writeup!

I think the big boys like Avalon, Mark Levinson, B&W and Wilson Benesch better watch out for this technology. How I wish BMW and B&W could have worked together. Then again asking a British and German company to work together would not go down too well I guess

I guess it's similar to MultiEQ by Audyssey and other similar systems used in home cinema amplifiers. A microphone have recorded white noise from the different speakers to calculate frequency and time shifts etc. to produce a more coherent sound stage. It's more advanced than just a simple equalizer that acts on frequencies alone.
