Sport Auto Clocks BMW M135i Around Nurburgring in 8:18

COMMENTS

We recently reported on the M135i recording a 8:05 bridge to gantry Nurburgring lap, but Sport Auto has now released its official time in the M135i for a full lap on the Nurburgring.

Sport Auto has piloted the M135i around the Ring in 8:18. The test car was RWD and equipped with a 6 speed manual transmission.

Here's how this time compares to other notable cars with similar lap times:

7:48 - BMW M3 GTS
7:50 - BMW M3 CSL
7:55 - BMW F10 M5
8:05 – BMW E92 M3 (2007)
8:09 – Audi RS4 (2006)
8:09 – BMW E63 M6 (2005)
8:13 – BMW E60 M5 (2004)
8:13 – Mercedes C63 AMG (2009)
8:15 – BMW 1M Coupe (2011)
8:16 – Porsche Cayman S (2009)
8:17 - Porsche Boxster S (2009)
8:18 – BMW M135i (2012)
8:18 - Lexus IS-F (2007)
8:22 – BMW E46 M3 (2000)
8:22 - BMW M Coupe (1998)
8:25 – Lotus Exige S (2008)
8:26 – Audi S5 (2008)

With such an impressive time, we can't wait for the recently spied M235i coupe, which will be based on the M135i, to hit the market (including North America) in 2014.

omg, only 3sec slower than 1M, impressive. Pretty nice set of cars the m135 joins in that list. Gotta love this car, seriously competing with cars that are 10, 20, 30 (even more?)thousand euros more. And it comes as a practical 5-door everyday-car even lol
would love to se how the AWD m135 compares aswell.

I do realize that the 1M is special. However, for a new generation car to not be faster or as fast as the fastest previous generation car? That's pretty disappointing.

I hope the M2 does better.

The 1M has M3 suspension and other components which will likely help around the track, whereas the M135 is mostly cosmetic.

Not bad at all, almost same time as a Porsche!

What are you talking about? That's like saying you're disappointed because the e92 335is wasn't faster than the e46 M3 around the track.

The M135i isn't the successor to the 1M. Apples to orange comparison. The M135i is a successor to the 135is. Compare it to that if you want, but comparing it to the 1M makes no sense. This M135i time is a great time.

Do people online just like to complain without thinking first? Seems like people's the first instinct is to be negative and complain...

The M135i is a successor to the 135is.

If that time is impressive, which it is, how does a Renault RS265 do the same circuit in 8:08? Maybe there is a short cut that Renault knows about that no one else knows?

The M135i ring time was performed with a manual, bet you a few $ the 8 Speed Auto would have been a few secs quicker.

It is a great time for M135i, I was expecting closer to E46 M3 time and am very impressed. I want to read all of the Super Test of course. This car is getting very close lap times to 1M and E9X M3 on tracks like Hockenheim, Nordschleife and else. It is obviously very close in terms of straight line acceleration too. All this despite its (few) shortcomings and imperfections (also few obvious advantages like stock Michelin PSS tires) vs those M cars and previous generation M cars which show just one thing; the fundamentals are very strong and a future M2 has the potential to be a great performing car unless BMW itself decides to cut it short because of company politics to keep a distance from more expensive future M cars.

I also hope this kind of performance and good reviews do not convince some heads in Munich to bury the idea of M2 and just keep the M135i as the top of the line model though. Everything is possible.

Driver difference Don't you think that our own Advevo would give a stock 1M a sub 8 minutes full lap? He sounded pretty confident when he claimed he and the car are capable of this and he did a 7.45 BTG time on a mostly stock car in the traffic. A driver like him also could give M135i a better time, no doubt about that. On the other hand, give Megane to Sport Auto and they wouldn't be able to get around that 8.08 time. My 2c.

Doesn't this car come with an M engine? It's a M car with M components is it not? I think the time is great by the way.

Except that one is an M car (by most people's standards!) and one isn't. Likely main reason for good time is the better PSS tires. Would probably take 10 seconds off of 1M.

Think of the M Performance cars (M135i / M135i) as Audi's S4 level and the 1M/M3/M5 as the RS4/RS5 level cars.

People are saying it could be faster with the 8speed auto but same could be said for the 2007 m3 which was a manual.

Anyone have any m3 DCT time? I would venture to say that would be a good 5 seconds faster given its huge benefit in the 120mph plus speeds in terms of its much favorable gearing and the fact there are so many long straights of this speed and higher compared to sub 80mph where gearing is not a huge advantage for dct

I thought that's what the IS and SI models were for but I guess not.

As I said in an earlier post in this thread, the M135i is a successor to the 135is basically. There won't be any more IS models going forward, replaced by these M performance cars
