M140i - Steering / Suspension 'noise' / thump ...

First start of the day - esp in the recent cold spell - on reversing out of the driveway, using anything over half-lock there's a couple of thump/bumps from the n/s front .... bit like driving over cats-eyes ... nothing evident fouling, and no obvious signs of brake-pad 'stiction' ....

Doesnt normally do it again after a short drive - and never does it if I reverse into the driveway to park - thus drive straight out instead of reversing the next day ..

Only once has it done it after some driving ... reversing out of a car park bay and again the 'cats-eye' thump/bump ....

Dealer eyeballed it up on ramps and cant see any evidence of 'touching' ... presumably it wont be the tyre against an inner valance, as it would have to be well out of round to produce individual thumps ...

Guess it will have to be left with the dealer for a more full investigation ...

Posting this in case any other M135 / M140i owners relate to the symptom ?

This is due to the Michelin PSS's on the front being 88Y i.e. soft sidewalls and folding over on them on full lock. It is perfectly normal.

Thanks - but not sure what you mean by 'soft sidewalls & folding over on them' ?

As the wheel goes onto full lock it tilts (castor angle). This tilt cause the tyre to fold over the edge of the tread which causes a thump through the suspension and steering.

I too had the problem you are describing and took the car back to the dealer who gave me this explanation.

When I changed the fronts to winters and then onto Goodyear Assymetric 3's when I replaced the PSS's (92Y rating on the front) the knocking was no more.

You can reduce the problem by increasing front tyre pressures, I think a lot of people run 2.4bar at the front.

No probs with this full-lock 'fold over' noise/bump ?

Very occasionally and with the higher pressure the BMW feels more stable

Higher pressures will give you quicker steering response and less rolling resistance. The disadvantage is that you give up grip. The contact patch is smaller. That is why race cars are running lower tyre pressures than road cars.

Thanks Ove ... comments on tyre wear at higher pressures - likelihood of wearing concave ?

Usually the higher pressure will cause the tyre to run colder, and the tyre wear will be slightly lower. In the old days, high pressure caused more wear around the center of the tread, but it is rather unpredictable with modern tyres. I don't know the Supersports well enough to know how they change the wear pattern at high pressures.

Well after a few days with Fronts at 2.4 bars, the phenomenon recurred this morning - first frosty morning for some weeks .... and it was during that previous cold snap I first noticed it ...

I kept the car on full rh lock for longer and it got quite bad !

Totally disappears on normal driving ....

Why don't you let go? "Full lock" (honestly, I had to look it up: shy to ask what you meant ) is something to be avoided when possible.

Well, tonight I had a full lock twice in narrow "circumstances": it's hard to tell when it's about to happen and I hardly ever notice, I guess. No Servotronic seems to work just fine for me still.

They say correct synchronization between the car's computer and steering (wheels angle control) can be broken (this will also affect DSC) resulting in power steering engine still working in full lock (as it's not detected). Another possible issue is the power steering engine fixing bolts are weak (they break on 2012 cars: the steering engine falls off). FWIW

Took 2 visits for them to decide that a recently released firmware patch download, with details of an Adaptive suspension fault which matched my symptoms - was the great panacea.

Apparently it also fortuitously would address the warm restart Fast Idle problem ......

Brilliant what can be done with software - even fix a mechanical problem !

.... we will see ...

Did you get the firmware update applied and if so were the problems solved?

Yes, thats what they did when it went in - sorry if that wasnt clear ...

No, not fixed - it did it again a couple of days later - again, it took a frosty temp to bring it on ....

No recurrence since the weather has warmed up ...

Keeping a closer eye on Tyre pressures has made me realise how variable the TPMS valves are at reporting pressure and temp ....

So, have you had the symptom again since your original posting ?
