Why on earth would they do either of those things?

I have a 2011 VW Jetta TDI. Have never been involved in a class-action lawsuit, but if I'm forced to take my vehicle in for a recall that robs me of fuel mileage or costs the vehicle a significant power performance, I'll likely join whatever class-action hits the street.

I'm in Tennessee, which has lower emission standards than other states, but the Feds will almost certainly force a recall anyway.

Hope WW3 doesn't break out due to all this, this is the people's wagon after all, the punishment meted out to GM does seem egregious, and the Germans are once again working on Super Weapons:

We are in for some interesting automotive times in the next few weeks.

VAG is owned something like 17% by Qatar, 20% by the government of Saxony and 50% by Porsche. The rest is freely traded. If Fiat acquired all of the remaining 13% it would hold a shit sack and would be unlikely to do more than have board membership.

VAG will survive, but its managing agents (including Winterkorn) may get jailed for their fraud.
