VWII GTI vs 2013 BMW 228 coupe

I currently drive a 08 BMW 335i coupe.

My next ride will be lighter and a more fun car.

In the USA both the new GTI VII and BMW 228i look like a fair comparison when they arrive in (late 2013?), or early 2014.

For those of you who have bought the new 128 hatch, did you consider the current GTI VI?

Thanks in advance.

I have been driving the recent VW Golf and Ford Focus quite a lot as rental cars. They have been basic versions, not the GTi.

Compared to the BMW one series, they both seem clearly inferior to me. The Ford misses out mostly in the interior, while the VW has issues when it comes to handling and feedback to the driver.

The current Golf has changed little since 2004. A new model is due early next year so it would be silly to buy new now.

The choice is simple, buy a BMW, it is rear wheel drive and you can turn off the traction control. Try drifting in a GTI

To me, as a BMW fan, why would I choose the Golf? Indeed, one could argue that the Porsche 911 or a nice little Ferrari drive better or look cooler. I'd agree too. But thats not the point.
The point is I love the new 1er, and thats why I'm on THIS forum.

I did consider the GTI and Golf R, but you sit more upright in the Golf (I've driven many of various generations) which isn't a problem or anything, it just doesn't feel nearly as sporty as a BMW.

Now, the 1 series has a more upright driving position than the 3 series which I was used to and that's why I'm going back to a 3 coupe after my lease is up on this 135i, but driving a Golf always felt like driving a van to me.

Its quite funny how you people are comparing 2 cars not even on the market. Ok, the mk7 GTI ain't gonna be that much of a surprise, but a 228i? Seriously? Thats nothing we've even seen spyshots of a chassis, not to mention the question wether this engine will actually be in there or not.
