I think this is disgusting and should not be acceptable, these women are not healthy as pictured... this would be considered completely abnormal 20 years ago... and even tho the fitness revolution hit many years ago, it just seems that some people dont take care of themselves. I have no issues with females that are not the prettiest, but god damn I cant handle overweight... the more people say this is ok, the more overweight people that you will see, health insurance premiums go up and more diseases and shorter lifespans.

Obesity does not only select the female body. The average BMI in teh USA is now 26.6 for females and 26.5 for males, where 26 is considered obese. It enormously increases the likelihood of comorbidities and is often viewed as being more dangerous than smoking cigarettes. Size 14 is obese and, depending on height, might be borderline mobidly obese.

Obesity is the elderly is growing as well, greatly contributing to Hypertension, COPD, CHF, Diabetes, MIs, etc...

I found it strange to hear that the average female waist size in the US has grown to 38", from 35" from studies performed just 6 years ago. Men now have an average waist of 40", which blows my mind. I think of 40" waists as huge (and I'm just over 50 y.o.).

Agree, it's a massive health risk and people don't realize what morbidly obese is. Most of the time they think of someone who's 300 to 600 pounds. When a woman is 5'3" tall, she doesn't have to be that heavy to fit that description.

It's very easy to be categorized as obese and I think it's a bit ridiculous. I used one of those fancy scales at the gym recently and was just bordering on obese. I was like, wtf, how can this be right??? I consider myself fit and need to lose ten pounds but that's annoying.

Those scales usually have an "athlete" setting that uses a different formula to calculate BMI. They say i'm obese as well, neither of us are.

But people who are sedentary, our heights and weights might be close to clinically obese. It's very specific to each person. Many factors play into the real answer.

Yeah, I figured it's the gym's way of making me feel bad and hoping I will hire their personal trainer.

Beat me to it! Calculating your BMI from weight is different if you go to the gym. Your muscles are a little bigger (or a lot bigger if you body build) and a lot more dense throwing off the results.

I'm 5'6 at 203lbs as of this am. By the BMI scale I'm on the verge of death from my morbid obesity

The average American woman...? Size 16-18??

I know there are a lot of chunkies around here but damn! I would've thought maybe the average was 10 - 12 at most.
My wife is a 6 and a 8 would be pushing it for me.

This further emphasizes the serious weight epidemic and acceptance in the US.

Careful. You're going to offend the chubbies and the chubby chasers.

Go to a Walmart. You'll find the equalizers.

Average is not the MEDIAN, some really large people are skewing that number.

Very good point.

And to further that point; just because its average, doesnt mean it should be encouraged.

hell, if that was the case, you could say everyone in highschool should strive for the average SAT or ACT scores, because thats the "norm". Odd form of socialism in a way
