A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Glad you said auto as most beginners want a manual, as far as cars go how about a Z3 you'll get it cheaper with lots of cash left over to buy parts..

If you want a manual you are not exactly a beginner. If you say "auto" you still have to learn.

But decent ones with 100K miles on them are at or above the OP's $8,000 mark.
One that's had some collision damage may suit him depending if he learns some panel beating skills with repainting.

I didn’t mean for you to look specifically for a 96 328i, just saying it was a great car, you’d be better off with a late e46 coupe, if you can find a good one within your budget.

I know you like the idea of a smaller car, but I have to mention how perfect the e39 5 series was. If you can find a nice 2003ish 530, you should definitely check it out. Super comfortable, incredibly solid, a great driver and a little more room in the back seat - which can come in handy for teenagers, or so I've heard...

This might be a winner if it checks out:

I have no idea about the car, but I started poking around market place near Akron and this seems like it checked most of his boxes.

Edit: wagons are super cool:

I like the E46!! Wow, that’s a lot of work done!! And it’s a good looking car!! The E91 bothers me a little. It bothers me when folks put a car up for sale with little, with easy to fix issues and those missing headlight covers and the tow hook covers bother me. Makes me wonder what big issues they didn’t address.

I’d consider an e36 or e46 330. Ultra smooth I6 engines!
