How does BMW come up with their Chassis Number?

I've been thinking about this and googling for a while now but I can't seem to find my answer. How does BMW come up with their chassis number? (E82, E90, E87, etc.)

Every car manufacturer has a project number for a car before it is given a commercial name. All of them.

BMWs just happen to be "known", as in BMW uses them forever and even stamps these numbers on parts.

But my other question. Why E82. Why e90 and f80. Why is there so many gaps in between the numbers. Too bad the link says it's unknown on why it does that.

Well the E90 is the 3 series sedan from 2006-2012 (maybe 2013?). It started with the E20 (model 2002) and went up from there to E26, E30, Easy E, etc. I suppose they ran out of numbers in the 1-100 for the E so they started over with F30 for 3 series, and F22 for 2 series. The F80 is the M3 sedan. M cars have a much higher designations so they aren't confused with the non-m models.

Let's say they call the M3 F32, what happens when they remodel and the new model is the F36? It would create confusion and nobody wants their M cars to carry a lower designation than a non-m. Hence they must leave room for future models. Other series have their own designations (such gas G10 for the new 7 series- I guess you gotta be a G to be riding in one of those?).

Anyway, this is all conjecture based on my limited knowledge of BMW along with personal guesses. So take it with a grain of salt.

How did they run out of numbers if they skipped numbers in the E chassis numbers?

Lol at the g10 comment

I don't think they "skip" numbers, but those numbers in between are projects that never become a product.

Until the current generation (Fxx), M cars didn't have their own chassis codes.

I am fairly certain the chassis codes are provided in order of project planning and nothing more. There may be a bunch of chassis codes that get used for a project that never gets to production, so it appears they skipped a bunch of numbers.

Or, they just pull the numbers out of a hat. A BMW hat.

When BMW started out, they skipped numbers in their series too. Eventually they will fill out all the numbers in between...1 series, 2 series, 3 series, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I wasn't really worried about anything lol. Just wondering like where do these numbers come from. Everyone who sees my front plate (it says E82.Love also on my Instagram) they always ask me "oh what does e82 mean?" and I just kinda tell them it's the chassis number and they ask me why is it e82? I had to make up something

I didn't mean to actually worry about it. I meant it as a joke. It used to be simple: 3 series, 5 series, 6, 7 and X series. Now it goes from 0-100 (exaggerated obviously)...so many damn series. I feel like they're going in the same direction as GM and Ford before. That may not be a good thing.

Looks like they're competing with Mercedes with all these new series coming out and coming to the US. IMO of course
