Keep in mind that American auto workers are not the problems. They're making some great cars for Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and BMW. They even makes some great cars for the big three. The problem is poor contracts that never took into account the likelyhood of competition outside of Michigan. The management and UAW couldn't come to terms with the changing world economy and saddled the company with outdated retirement and healthcare benefits and overloaded salaries.

The airlines broke out of the same kind of problems with bankruptcy. There's no reason that the US automakers can't do the same thing. Bankruptcy is not the end of the business.
