But oils with a larger span between the values, like 0W-40, usually degrade quicker than oils with lower span, like 5W-30.
Here in Norway, the recommended oil for our 116i is Castrol EDGE Pro. BMW LL04 0W-30. |

- 0w-40 flows like 0 grade when cold and 40 grade at operating temperature. - 5w-30 flows like 5 grade when cold and 30 grade at operating temperature. So the "just use thicker oil to prevent leaks" is a myth? |

The second figure refers to film strength at high temperature. A lower number means thinner oil. Also notice that the film strength index is also affected by the first number in some cases, like 5W-40 compared to 15W-40. So none of these figures are measurements directly in some unit. You have to look up the index to see what the range is. |

You're also in a much cooler climate then here in Australia. I bought 0W-40, purely because of the higher strength at high temps. Where I live it never ever gets below 0degC in winter, but during our summer it is quite often in the high 30's to mid 40's.

I used 5W-50 for an interim change at 7,500k. My service indicator is now saying 4,500k to service (with 10,500k on the odo). Which may answer several questions in this thread. And raise several others
