Car left on for 8 hours!!!!!!

Can't believe I did this but it happened. My car is 3 weeks old with 1300km on it.
Running late for work. Parked car in shopping centre car park next to an industrial ac unit which is loud. The radio was off so no music. Ac was on. The car was parked in direct sun so couldn't see the DRLs were on even though I looked back from a distance. Car was locked. I obviously failed to push the start/stop button. Came back after work and had a heart attack.
What do I do? Everything seems fine. No warning lights. The car starts ok. Change the oil?
Heeeeeeelp!

I do not think any problem was caused. 8 hours is not that long period to require an oil change (it is like 1.000 kms or so)...however, do check the oil level.

However, it is weird that uyou left the car (i.e. the key fob was not inside the car), you locked it and the car stayed on!!!

Yeah the key was in my pocket the whole time. I would have assumed there was some kind of "auto off" feature when there is no one in the car, the doors are locked and the key is out of range.

I'm freaking out a bit that I've screwed my brand new engine on my m135i!

I'm so angry at myself! Faaaaaark!

Don't be angry, I do not believe that any harm is caused in the engine.

Dude !!!!!! How can you forget to power off a car when you park ?
It must be the excitement caused by the M135i

There's absolutely no reason to worry

As long as the cooling system worked as designed, which it obviously did otherwise you'd have error messages, then all that happened was the engine idled for 8 hours while circulating nice clean oil and cycling the cooling fan every once in a while, Absolutely nothing to get worked up about. At 600 rpm, 8 hours would be the equivalent of approximately 21 mph x 8 = 168 miles. Nothing. Less wear and tear than a long traffic jam on the M25.

So, no need to do anything except forgetaboutit.

BTW, I parked my new M135i and was about to walk away when my wife pointed out that the engine was still running. She only noticed due to the hot exhaust gas on her leg! I couldn't believe it. This is surely a design oversight. No way the engine should continue running in the complete absence of the key fob.

I know the auto start stop feature isn't a well received feature here, but it has saved me a few times of not 'switching' off the car.
It also sounds an alarm that the car key is not in the car

I'm told...and I haven't tested it...that the car will remain running in the absence of the key fob...in fact, it can be driven until the fuel runs out, or is stopped by pressing the "Stop" button...but it just won't restart!

As SteveC says, if there are no error lights, it shouldn't be a problem. But you can always just ask your service centre to check.

It will be absolutely fine. Part of the BMW extreme weather testing is parking a car in the middle of a desert for a few days and left idling! All they do is top the fuel up!

Worry not! If the car thought the conditions were that bad your oil service countdown would have significantly dropped!

You can leave the car with out the fob, been a feature for years on BMWs and MINIs. I used it to leave my MINI defrosting in the winter. Start car, get out, close door and lock, leave to bake for 10 mins. On the BMWs and MINIs that you had to insert the fob, if you started the car, stopped it, removed the fob and pressed the start stop button within 5-10 secs without opening the doors the car would start again.

Hmm. I used to read in car manuals: : DO NOT let the engine heat up while leaving it on idle.
So you need to drive around for the engine to warm up, then it is OK to let it idle (for a long time).
So defrosting a car by cold-starting the engine and then letting it idle for 10 mins, sounds like bad to me.

Unless modern cars are different ?

Except for the ~8 liters of fuel wasted, no harm was done.
Don't worry about the engine.

You can drive off without the key also, but once the engine stops, it is not possible to start again.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. I feel a little better about it... But only a little. I still feel like a complete moron though.

At least I know I'll NEVER make this mistake again

Wow, that's an interesting design feature there which I hadn't thought about. We just placed an order for an auto 125 to replace our 335, and this will be the first time that I have a car that doesn't require the fob to be inserted into the receptacle. Probably something that I will need to keep an eye on when we get our car.

It does sort of remind me about flying - there are those who have landed wheels up and those that are going to!! Similar principle here I think.

I understand it is a new car, and I hope this makes you feel a little better.

I asked my dealer about your situation when I was there, and everyone from the sales to the old mechanics and to the new mechanics said don't worry about it.

Cheers
