In Chinese culture they place heavy emphasis on wealth and image hence the attitude. Not saying that excuses it, it's still obviously abhorrent but sadly there's quite a few people who are image obsessed who'd do the same.

I just showed this to my wife who is Chinese. As a mom she is upset, but at the same time she is not surprised at all and said it probably happens all the time in China.
