Cool 2012 1-series (F20) Turbo 3-Door Hatch Spied

Reported on 1ADDICTS HOMEPAGE.

Seen here is the most recent sighting of the upcoming 2012 1-series hatchback undergoing testing in southern Europe. The dual split exhausts out back hints at a turbo engine. It could be the rumored Tri-Turbo Petrol 4 cylinder engine, or perhaps the N54 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbo motor. The split exhausts, the extra cooling ducts up front in the camouflage, larger wheels, and what appears to be large brakes, all point to this potentially being a range topping F20 1-series. These photos also show a sportier mirror design and a more exposed rear fascia/bumper than previous F20 spy photos.

The last sighting of a turbo F20 1-series was nearly 10 months ago.

We expect the next generation F20 1-series to debut at the 2011 Frankfurt IAA motorshow in September 2011.

Special attention is being taken for a Performance model for the 3/5dr Sporthatch which could be identified using the Tii brand as a challenger for such performance hatches in Europe such as Audi S3 , Renault Sport Megane , VW Golf GTi , Opel Astra OPC and Ford Focus RS.

Sadly, Such a market does not exist in North America.

Scott, any ideas of when such a model is due for release in Europe? Will the M or Supersports model come much later?

Thanks

Mark.

The most powerful 1 Series will have a Gazoline 2.0l I4 Twin-Scroll-Turbo with about 250 PS. Whether one turbo or two I do not know but definitely not three. Three is for the Diesel 3.0l I6 that will be in found in the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5 and X6. The 1 Series will have no more I6 engines. Three maybe aswell on a new Gazoline 3.0l I6.

0 Series/MINI: I4>I3 (not 2.0l I4 but 1.6l I4)
1 Series/X1/Z2: I4>I3 (2.0l I4)
3 Series/X3/Z4: I6>I4, I3 (3.0l I6)
5 Series/X5/Z?: V8>I6, I4 (4.4l V8 until the new 4.0l V8 comes out)
7 Series: V12>V8, I6 (6.0l V12 until the new smaller displacement V12 comes out)

Audi S3, VW Golf R and VW Scirocco R have the same engine, and I know (so is BMW), that the 1 Tii Hatch will be the best, sportiest and most capable car, but Audi has yet place for an RS3. May BMW respond to it with an M1 Hatch F20, using the technical parts of the M1 Coupé F22? I mean why not build an M1 Hatch F20 instead of a 1 Tii Hatch F20? BMW Tii will it be built by BMW AG or by BMW M?
Does BMW think about something like this?
BMW vs. Audi
BMW Tii vs. Audi S
BMW M vs. Audi RS

While increased competition may change matters, BMW doesn't need to compete directly with every model/line a competitor has. BMW already has, indirectly and without an official series name, competed with Audi's S models through the N54, M Sport packages (cosmetics), and in some cases as the Z4 and 3er coupe/cabrio the is version of these cars. They certainly don't need to compete with Audi's S line in every single model.

You are right. But just an example: S4 vs. 335i. The 335i is as good if not better (E90 is already quite old just as N54) than S4. What the S5 has more is exclusivity, and this does change something. Audi S4 does sound/feel better than Audi A4 3.0 TFSI, just as BMW 3 Tii would sound/feel better than 335i. The 335i is a normal 3 Series with a different engine, the S4 has still more changes compared to A4.

As cars grow bigger and heavier, it is good to see a car that is more reasonable in size and hopefully lighter.

Only if your head is in the sand. You realize the 1er has been a five door hatch since 2003, and the three door has been around since 2006?

Hatches are VERY hot in other parts of the world, us Americans need to think outside of our borders sometimes. I, personally, love hatches and wagons, but most americans do not...

They will sell every one they make. I'm not sure how you can comment on the looks of a heavily camouflaged vehicle, the headlights, taillights, mirrors and wheels are not final production units and the swirl paint hides most of the character lines of the sheet metal...

So it's a bad idea for BMW to build the next version of a car that has sold over a million copies since 2004?

Also there is so much camo on that thing how can you say it's ugly? You can't even tell what it looks like other than it's a hatch.

Haters go away...

Now, the question remains, is this upcoming 1er hatch RWD, or the rumored and dreaded FWD?
