Did anybody test 0-100?
The 116i is supposed to do 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds according to the specifications from BMW, which is a rather good figure with only 136 hp for such a heavy car.
I did a test run yesterday, and ended up with 8.9 seconds. I guess both the start and the gearing could have been better, so 8.5 seconds should be possible with a good run. Anybody else done any testing? I plan to do a dyno run on Thursday to see how much power there is. |

I'd be very interested to hear the outcome of your dyno run.
You have a manual, right? I notice that BMW quotes the 116i manual's 0-100 as 8.5 as you've said, but the auto as 8.7. Funny enough, with the 118i, the manual is 7.4 and auto 7.2, and for the M135i 5.1 vs 4.9. I wonder why the 116i is the only one where the auto box is slower? I'll do a test run sometime this week, even though my shifting sucks IMHO. How did you do the timing? |

I will post the results. I did the timing by recording a sound file. I make a sound to mark the start, and use my computer to figure out what the RPM is based on sound frequency. Since I know the gear ratios, I can tell exactly when I hit 100 in the sound file. I'd say it is accurate to within +- 1/10 second.

There's always the BMW M Power App? I've used it previously when I had my 335D but not tried it with the 120D yet....

The M Power app is not running on my dated Nokia with Symbian operating system. The built in GPS antenna is too slow as well for some other available apps (Racechrono). With a 5 Hz external antenna, it would probably work well.
About the future 0-100 video, it seems to have a very short second gear. The 116i does 105 km/h in second, while this powerful car runs out of revs at 90? |

Had my 118d n the dyno last Saturday it came out with 151.5 bhp
The guy that put it on reckons he'll be able to map it to 200 bhp without any further mods, he's looking into it at the moment as BMW have locked down the ECU's so it may not be possible to get into it to map it |

I did a new 0-100 km/h test today with RaceChrono datalogger and ELM327 bluetooth OBD2 adapter. Result: 8.4 seconds. 0-60 mph was 8 seconds flat.
So the 116i is slightly faster than BMW says. |

The peak figures on the 116i don't seem that great but when you have a look at the power and torque "curves" it's easy to see why they feel so strong on the road. Maximum torque is available at any point between 1350rpm and 4300rpm. The engine is producing maximum power by 4400 rpm and keeps producing maximum power until 6500rpm. The 116i and 118i are exactly the same engine, the 116i has a slightly different exhaust front section but the ECU is basically capping the power lower. If you want to look at the curves for the 116i have a look through the 1 Series 3 door f21 press release, page 33. Cheers Lee |

If you do a comparison on this site http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ it shows the auto as being quicker to 65mph as by that speed the manual has made another gear change. The 118i and all the diesels need two gear changes to 62mph so are slower than the auto. Cheers Lee |

The torque curve looks like the wheels were loosing traction on the rollers. Certainly shouldn't expect to see those sort of dips from a modern turbo petrol.

Acceleration Data for 116i
Hi All,
I thought that you may be interested in the data I logged on my wifi OBD device using Outils OBD Facile App on my IPhone, for a standing start in Sport + mode. I was very impressed with this, because the 0-100km time was 8.45 seconds, which is faster than the 8.7 seconds quoted for the 116i Steptronic. The time for 0-60 miles per hour (96.5 km/hr) was just under 8 seconds Time km/hr 0 0 0.2 2 0.35 5 0.55 9 0.75 13 0.95 17 1.15 20 1.4 24 1.65 27 1.85 31 2.05 34 2.3 38 2.55 41 2.8 46 3 48 3.25 51 3.5 53 3.7 56 3.9 58 4.15 61 4.4 65 4.65 67 4.9 69 5.1 71 5.33 73 5.5 74 5.7 76 5.95 78 6.15 82 6.35 84 6.55 85 6.8 87 7.05 89 7.25 91 7.5 92 7.75 94 8 97 8.25 98 8.45 100 I've had the car from new and it has only done 2500 miles, so I was really happy with the result. It's no overly scientific as I wasn't able to take an average in two directions, but I think it was a fair run. |
