I think those who really know are not yet allowed to tell us.

My guess is that there will be two models replacing the F20. One with FWD and small engines, and one with RWD and big engines.

As much as I read and heard about the next 1 series, it's probably going to be FWD.

Don't know about that, but making one FWD and the other RWD is far more costly for the production line, not to mention both models would have to have very different suspension setups, weight distribution (Normally for a FWD car is better to have slightly more weight at the front and 50:50 distribution for RWD). One of the reasons they are moving to FWD is more space in the cabin (no transimission tunnel, no diff under the trunk), so that would mean different chassis as well. Hope I'm wrong though.

I mean two completely different cars. BMW seems to be willing to have a rather wide range of models. BMW have pretty much confirmed that the next one series will be FWD, but people working for BMW have also ensured me that there will be a small sporty model with RWD as well. I guess something like the M135i, which will be unaffordable in Norway. So I am afraid the F20/F21 will be the last affordable RWD hatchback in the market.

I doubt that small sporty model will be a hatchback. I've come across some information (can't remember where, maybe from SCOTT26) that MINI will be making a RWD car, don't know if it's just a rumor or not, but then it would make sense to make a small RWD car for BMW, just not a hatchback, probably.

FWD for the 1 series and RWD for the 2 series which is more or less the same size and will probably be a 4 door version also. Something like the 3 series and 4 series.

This is partly the reason for the creation of the 2 series. The next 1 series will be FWD and the next 2 series will continue to be RWD.

This is what I have read in many reliable sources. Obviously nothing is set in stone until BMW actually announce & release the cars.

Yes, the Z2 is rumored to be FWD. But there are also plans for a Z1 and Z3, which could be RWD. Not to mention the BMW-Toyota collaboration will probably make a small RWD sports car or roadster.

The 2 series is too big. I guess I have to search for other brands than BMW next time.

perfect BMW for me would be 2 series sedan or gran coupe but more lower and wider than the current 1 and 2 series they are little bit too tall and narrow

Interesting. I sometimes find the F20 slightly too wide when I drive on narrow roads, and meet oncoming traffic!
The E30 had perfect proportions.

In this class it's possible, and maybe wise to use fwd. Just look at the Renault Megane RS Trophy on the ring. A lot of fast cars are left behind.
