I always have the feeling this thing can only get into spots where basically a blind person can park too. How does it handle narrow spots?

And did you brake right before you hit the car behind you, or did it do that?

Park Assist is pretty awesome at getting you into the tightest parallel parking spaces, it doesn't need huge clearances. Strongly recommended in anything bigger that a F10 or a touring model.

The problem is the driver parked ahead or behind you (in the obligatory Corsa) who almost certainly needs way more room to exit his space.

I would spec one in my F07 in a flash had it been available then.

The spot here is not as big as it seems. The rear camera is somewhat deceiving and it actually shows a wider gap, but believe me: it's not that wide!
The system can detect a parking spot when driving up to a speed of 36kms/h. and provided your car is no more than 1,5 metres away from the row of vehicles. Then, it will work if there's a minimum gap of 60cms at the back and at the front for your vehicle to park (i.e. your own vehicle plus 1,2 metres).
If the available gap is too narrow, then the system simply won't activate.
I think it's a nice help for people who find this kind of parking difficult...
Yes, you have to brake and then change from R to D. Everything else, the system takes charge.

It's a cool gadget per se, but I can't help thinking this is designed for older people and less skilled drivers (of course NOT including you Brenyaman )......
Would be sort of ashamed using it, but maybe it can't be seen from outside?

People don't believe me when I say my car parks itself.... It is pretty cool, but I always double check the curb distance in the mirror... I'd hate to scuff the 18's showing off

Been driving for 20 years now, so no problem on that dpt.
I ordered the Park Assist with the missus in mind...
Let's hope she gets to use it... sometime.
