Back! 116d -> 320dA -> 116i M-Sport
Hi! I'm back at the 1-series board again. And I'm very excited.
Summer 2013 i bought a F20 116d Urban Line which I had for 8 months or so, I did like the car much but it missed cruise control which I didn't realize until too late. I sold the car and bought a 2014 F31 320dA which I found too boring and when I had the opportunity to sell the car with almost no loss I did it after 6 months. I have been looking for a F20 M135i for a while now and I was really close of buying one a couple of months ago... Since then I bought a more expensive apartment than I had planned for, so at the moment there will be no M135i. INSTEAD, I bought a 2015 116i M-Sport. Never tried the engine, but I hope it' fine... I will get back with impressions when I get the car, hopefully before this weekend. Here is the equipment list/car data if someone is interested: Modellbezeichnung: 116i Ausführung: Europa Typschlüssel: 1A11 E-Code: F20 Karosserie: Sports Hatch Lenkung: links Türen: 5 Motor: N13B16U0*- 1,60l (100kW) Antrieb: Heckantrieb Getriebe: manuell Außenfarbe: Black Sapphire Metallic (475) Innenraum: Stoff Hexagon Alcantara/anthrazit (HAAT) Produktionsdatum: 20.08.2014 Werk: Regensburg Code Optional Equipment S1CAA Selection of COP relevant vehicles S1CBA CO2 package S230A Extra package, EU-specific S249A Multifunction f steering wheel S258A Tire with run-flat functionality S2N4A BMW LM Rad 18" M Sternspeiche 386 S2PAA Lug bolt retainer S2VBA Tyre pressure control (TPC) S302A Alarm system S320A Deleted, model lettering P337A M Sports package S428A Warning triangle and first aid kit S481A Sports seat S493A Storage compartment package S494A Seat heating driver/passenger S4ADA Interior trim strips, alu, brushed, fine S4AEA Armrest front, retractable S4DLA Accent strips, black, high-gloss S502A Headlight cleaning system S507A Park Distance Control (PDC), rear S520A Fog lights S521A Rain sensor S522A Xenon Light S534A Automatic air conditioning S544A Cruise control with brake function S563A Light package S5DAA Passenger airbag deactivation S663A Radio BMW Professional S698A Area-Code 2 for DVD S6ACA Intelligent emergency call S6AEA TeleServices S6NSA Convenience telephony with extended smartphone connectivity S704A M Sports suspension S710A M leather steering wheel S715A M Aerodynamics package S760A High gloss shadow line S775A Headlining anthracite S842A Cold-climate version S850A Additional Export tank filling S853A Language version English S885A On-board vehicle literature Swedish S8KAA Oil-maintenance interval - 24 months/30,000 km S8SMA Car ident. number visible from outside S8TGA Thiefproofing device S993A model year code in VIN S9AAA Outer skin protection Sorry about the long list... |

Hi Ipp,
I'm curious as to why you chose the 116i, have you test driven it? What made you come back to the 1 series. I thought that the 320da is more powerful, but you said it was boring. I have a 116iA and think it is brilliant. It seems much more powerful than the 136 bhp implies. Don't forget to run your new engine in. I've only done 300 miles, and I don't know if it is my imagination, but it really seems to pull harder than when I first ran it in. Happy driving, I think it's really great car to drive! |

116i is an underestimated car, when you drive it you question the 136 bhp, coz it feels much faster. Good choice, but you had to leave 135i which plays on another league
Why do you think 320d is boring? |

I think the thing with the 320d was that i had the standard chassie and also performance wise I was expecting more. It had amazing mileage though, almost the same as the 116d. Quote:
I have never tried the 116i before, I'll get it this friday. Same day as the LCI is out... I'll report back after the weekend. |

I'll report back after the weekend.[/QUOTE] Being petrol, The 116i has considerably lower toque than the diesels, so at lower rpm it won't pull as hard. To get the maximum power from the engine, you need to rev it hard (my auto revs up to 6500 rpm before changing gear. Consequently you won't really be able to judge the power until you have run the engine in (which is 1200 miles according o my manual). Don't be tempted to rev the engine too high until it has been run in, because it can reduce long term performance. I'm interested to see what you think of the performance. If you think you want more power, you can tune it to 200 hp either with an AC Schnitzer piggyback device (which comes warranty) or a engine remap. Have fun! |

But for a petrol engine, it doesn't really like high RPM. It has the torque peak from 1350 RPM, and you can experience the maximum power from 4400 RPM. No need to run it all the way to 6500 to see the potential, although it is nice to be able to do that once it is run in. The wide RPM range is a big advantage over the 116d. The difference in maximum torque is only 40 Nm.

I'm sure you are right, but my auto (steptronic) revs right up to 6500 rpm before changing up gear, so I'm assuming this is necessary for maximum acceleration. I would have thought it is even more necessary with the manual, because it has 6 gears instead of the 8 gears that the auto has? I have also found that my car really seems to pull harder since it has done 2000 miles. It's only an impression, and it may just be due to me driving harder but I wondered what you think? |

May I add?
Some say it does not really like idle (low?) RPM either. High RPM (once warmed!) "cleans" the engine, but it should be avoided to use for unnecessarily long time, of course.

It's the maximum power range extension, I suppose. I drove a loan 320i in double sport mode (the car, as sport+ of my choice wasn't there and the 8-speed auto gearbox). In kickdown it rocked the tachometer between 5000 and 6500 RPM (approx.). The acceleration was just amazing. 116i has a "secret" (turbine pressure) boost mode with 240 Nm available in 1500-3500 RPM. |

I am also pretty sure the performance of the car is slightly limited when it is new. |

I am wondering why you guys did not buy a 125i or a 135i if you about more performance out of your cars.
I gather there must be a valid reason. Is there a Hugh price difference between these models or do the 125i and 135i attract higher on road costs or taxes and that prohibits them. |

I think I have a fetish for small engines.
Seriously. I could afford a larger engine (M135i), but I don't want to spend another 15.000€ on a car that's going to be parked among other cars on the city streets. And also I got a good deal on this 116i probably since the LCI is out very soon. |

Back in the real world however, a 135i would cost me approx £100/month more in finance, and then there is increased fuel cost and road tax. I could afford it, if I REALLY wanted it, but I couldn't really justify the cost to myself. In the real world the 116i seems to have all the performance I need, because the roads where I live are quite congested, and I haven't found an inexpensive local race track. Although I find power and performance figures fascinating (maybe at least in part because I'm and Enginerr), in reality I just want a car that I enjoy driving and don't worry about justifying the cost. |

I don't know how the gearbox decides to change gear, but it seems very efficient at picking the best timing to match the type of driving you want. Last edited by RMech; 01-16-2015 at 12:00 PM.. |

I knew about the LCI. I got a very good discount. I'm happy with the deal anyways. But to be honest the LCI was much larger than I would have imagined.
Also the old 116i is now the 118i and more expensive (1.000€). Last edited by ipp; 01-16-2015 at 01:00 AM.. |

Really NEEDED a new car back in Nov and definitely wouldn't have been able to wait. The new one looks good, but at first glance I can't see much difference and my purchase was very price sensitive, so probably good timing for me .
