Agreed.

This is just disgusting. So it's going to be an xDrive 180HP sedan? Talk about slow by today's standards. At least offer the 120 AND the 130 - what engine would the 125 even use? There are no -25 models in the US at present ..

It also leaves a gaping hole in their lineup - a compact 4 door with some power under the hood. Annoyed they gave the 2 series a great set of engines, but are shafting the 1 series. Not sure if they expect this to actually improve their bottom line.

Heck, I would buy an M135 RWD 5 door hatch if they sold it here in the states.

BMW has lost their way, and while they may find more profits elsewhere, they lost out on me purchasing another BMW for some time.

I'm with you. While the 3-Series still might be more dynamic in terms of driving than the A4 and C-Class, it isn't that much ahead of those two with the F30 - enough to pick it over the new C-Class.

If it's not a RWD sedan, then BMW loses the only competitive edge they had over the CLA and the A3.

I've preferred Audi's designs better than BMW's, but driving dynamics always trumped in the past. Since the delta in performance is now less pronounced, I'd jump in an A3/S3 before waiting for this car if I was in the market for a small sedan.

Why would I buy a FWD BMW ? There are so many other cheaper but equally good choices out there if RWD is out of the picture.

They should at least make the xDrive rear-bias if they can.

I'm genuinely excited to see this car materialize. Outside of the Project-i I think this is one of the most critical vehicles BMW has developed in a long time.

I just hope it's good looking. A move to FWD will offend a lot of enthusiasts, and though I don't think it will actually dent the sales too much at all, if it's ugly, I think people may still go down the the route of Merc's aggressively styled CLA, or Audi's smart (though some-what predictable) A3.

Also, I want to see this in the BTCC RWD will be heavily regulated against soon, and I'd like to see a BMW remain on the grid...

FWD is a winner. I believe BMW is able to reduce the weight a lot due to FWD and other measures. Aerodynamics is also important. Combine this with a 3cylinder engine. All these together will result in below 100g/km. These will sell like hot cakes.

Who cares if its below 100g/km? It will have horrible understeer, it is FWD, and if one only has the options of a 3 and 4 cyl motors -- where is the tower of power those of us who are holding onto their e46s are wanting?

This car will sell like hotcakes to badge riders. Those who care about driving dynamics, and need 4 doors will be forced into keeping their e46 330/e90 335is forever.

Agree with this point.

Sadly, this car is not even remotely and enthusiast car. I don't mind the I4, but the fact there will only be a 125 at best, and not even a 130 or 140 is pathetic. It's going to be basically a mini cooper with 4 doors, and I don't have anything against Mini's, but they aren't meant to be BMW's.

The 3 series is headed in the direction of almost being priced out of my range, yet there is no 4 door RWD sedan to substitute that need of what the 3 series used to be. I may have to consider Audi next time around, solely based on the fact that BMW doesn't win in the AWD arena, and I'll take an AWD Audi A3/A4 over a FWD/AWD 1 series.

Now the car is out in the open it is time some impressions started to appear and look no further.

The interesting thing here is the car in this image is in a way to describe basic and the real car has more adventurous details. Especially with more chiseled and angular looks . Stretched headlights aside a wide kidney grille and high placed rear lights that are also more stretched keeping in line with the next generation of BMW sedans.

The render is based on the Active Tourer so it has the proportions of a FWD car as illustrated by the spy photographs.

Yeah, errm. I'm not loving the look of that render. I really hope BMW doesn't try and do anything too off the wall. Accepting this car is already a big ask for some enthusiasts, simply good looks would help to ease the pain for them.

this car is not for enthusiasts. and bmw does not care about enthusiasts with it. they are looking to introduce a car sub 30k with 199 lease deals. with the 3er becoming bigger and bigger, it keeps increasing the price of it. they need the 1er sedan (in fwd) because the typical badge chasing consumer is afraid of rwd and low gas mileage. They want a badge and a cheap payment to say "look at me, look at me... bmw.. yea thats right"

that being said, minus the stupid headlights and sharp edges, i like it and think we'll all come around with the LCI M-sport when they will more than likely create a version based on the I4 turbo pushing almost 300hp.

You have to remember, they always introduce a newer engine with the facelift. They have to see how many they can sell to the teenage girls first to offset the R&D cost. after that, they will have more fun with it and create an enthusiasts car.

The rendering suggests the oner sedan is about 1ft wide, how else would it balance on single step? Active park assist just got real?
