130i crashes spectacularly

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Happened last week-end in Zandvoort during BMW drivers days.
Fortunately both pilots escaped unscathed.

Not really. The car did not come to a very sudden stop. You are rather well protected inside a modern race car.

I don't think the outcome would have been as good in a road car without the roll cage.

Helmets, six point harnesses and a roll cage is working well in crashes like this, but a production car is not so far behind. In the old days, the difference was light night and day, but modern technology has been catching up. In fact, you have to know what you are doing to improve the collision safety with a roll cage now, since you are making the interior of the car more dangerous with all the tubes.

For sure he had the DSC switched off, but there was no reaction from the driver, trying to make a power slide and avoid the collision

I have been in that situation quite a few times, when a slide gets out of hand, and the car starts veering off to the inside of a corner. In the old days, before ABS, it was easy to recover by stepping hard on the brakes, and locking up the wheels temporarily. That will not stop the car from rotating, but it will stay on the tangent direction, not leaving the track.

With new cars, I have found the best way to recover such a situation (once it is too late to catch the slide in a controlled way), is to step on the clutch pedal and pull the handbrake. Stay off the brake pedal. This will cause the car to swap ends and miss the inside edge of the corner. When the car is starting to go towards the outside, go hard on the brakes again.

The usual cause is a loose nut behind the wheel

That is indeed a spectacular crash. Looks like the cage did a nice job keeping the occupants safe on the rollover.

Pretty violent. Don't believe they would survive in a road car, the roll cage and racing harness kept them within the car. As a volunteer paramedic, I am appalled to see the emergency services not immobilise them before they went in for a once over by the doctors. Whiplash almost certain.

You sound like you know what you're talking about. You had me fooled for about 10 seconds. Haha

If you disagree with my opinions, please elaborate. I would like to discuss it further.

I was being entirely facetious, I am hardly qualified to criticise or have an alternate view on this subject. I own/owned a couple of cars that could provide this level of excitement but I can confirm they have never been airborne Iran sideways. And hopefully that's how it will stay.

May I ask how you are so knowledgeable in this area?

I have been driving on tracks regularly for 15+ years, as participant and instructor. I have been slightly airborne and have spent a lot of time driving sideways. Here in Norway, we have track days on frozen lakes in the winter, where we can spend hours drifting around from corner to corner. This is very valueable practice for avoiding crashes when things get out of hand.

Although I have run off tracks plenty of times, I have very little experience with actually crashing myself. I have seens plenty of other cars flip over, though.

I sure does, although it probably oversells my abilities. All the trophies in the picture were won with that 318i, but the thing is that the 318i was slow enough to not run against the fastest cars. Sometimes there was not all that hot competition in my class.
