front crank seal problems

I've seen posts here about "belts being sucked into the engine". As a shop owner working on BMW for 30 years, I didn't believe that. Well, I found out it's kinda true. Had a 08 128i coupe come in the shop. Fault code 2D06 was stored. ICOM diagnosis was a leak. Smoke tested the engine, smoke poured out of the front crank seal. Removed the vibration dampner, and I saw a strand of belt sticking out of the front crank seal. I started pulling it out of the engine. It was about 18" long. Removed the front crank seal and found 2 more strands inside the engine. Yes getting the sealer and primer were a problem. Finally found it, replaced the seal, engine runs like a top now. The belt unravels and wraps around the crank between the dampner and front cover. When it runs out of room, it pushes past the seal, chewing it up, and goes INSIDE the engine. Had to see it to believe it. I hope this helps other people with this problem.
