Congrats on the S3, great choice. The Golf R is a hell of a car. Thinking that VW's are for girls, hipsters or whatever is completely beyond stupid. It's like those who say that people who drive BMW's are all douchebags. There are plenty of BMW drivers who act like @ssholes on the road, same goes for certain owners of Vdubs. The Golf R is a lot of car and a perfect daily driver for many. I almost went that route before the test drive and the main reason for going with the M235 is the more RWD feeling even in my Xdrive as opposed to the AWD Golf R feeling like a FWD most of the time. Still an APR stage 2 Golf R breaks under 12 seconds in the 1/4 mile while being a comfortable daily/grocery getter.

Congrats OP, but you realize the S3 is a Golf R that's been rebadged as an Audi right? Same engine and drivetrain. It's still a FWD unit but "AWD" based on the Haldex unit, so the computer tells it when to deliver power to the rear.

I haven't driven one, but all the writeups seem positive.
I just hope to run into an overzealous Vdubber on the highway picking a fight with my baby Bimmer. |

Excellent car...I'd be careful running against a Golf R especially one that's tuned. You might get embarrassed.

Edit: on a mustang dyno, I ran 325whp/345wtq with JB4 map2 on 93, intake, downpipe, intercooler, chargepipes Now, I have meth, full exhaust, custom tune on JB4, and putting down just under 375whp/393wtq on the same dyno. Comparatively, an APR stage II golf R weighs ~150-200lbs less but put down 362bhp/370tq at the crank.... At the wheels it would around 290whp/296 wtq The Golf would need an upgraded turbo (stage III) to get to the power-to-weight my car is currently. Last edited by Mywifes335; 04-17-2016 at 12:58 AM.. |

VW/Audi really perfected the holeshot with their S variants. On the highway, it's a different story. Moot, since we'll see what happens when it happens. |

What a wonderful car. It has that fun factor with practicality. The ride quality was excellent. I could DD this car in a heartbeat. IMHO, it is better than anything BMW has to offer right now outside of the ///M, regardless of price. If you buy it, you won't regret it. |

Interesting conversation and congrats OP on the S3!
I'm still on the fence between an M235i and an R (that's a 7k difference plus more expensive insurance). I wish Audi offered the S3 in manual, at least as an option. Oh well. |

The biggest problem which i've already mentioned about the R is the FWD biased AWD system. Also not a fan of the lack of a sunroof as an option. The Golf R does have the full 4 doors plus the hatch which i'm a fan of. I'd also say the exterior headlights are better. In the end, the test drive on the M235 sold me on the car along with IMO a much better overall appearance. |

Perhaps BMW got traumatized when the N54 M135i didn't sell much in US (great car, but just weird shape for most people). I love the 2016 M135i though, just beautiful... too bad they will probably make the next gen FWD. Last edited by rainfall; 04-19-2016 at 02:05 PM.. |

If you're considering the vw I'd look more closely at the GTI unless you really want/need awd. It's cheaper, more economical to run and more enjoyable to drive in most situations. The awd saps some of the enjoyment from the chassis. A mk7 with performance pack would be my choice from that group, but then again I daily my z4m coupe....118k and counting
