Software Updates

Hi. Was wondering if there is a way to find out about software updates for the car (not the media ones you can pull off the net yourself) without having to ask the dealer.
Also if there was an update, can you request to have it installed and do you need to pay, even if car is new?
I'd like as much info on this as poss before I approach my dealer.

No you cannot. You have to ask your dealer, as each car (depending on it equipment) may have a different update (since there is an update for each and every ECU on the car...and are at least 10 of them!!). So, the dealer needs to plug the car and connect to the BMW server in order to find out which update(s) is for the specific car.

lol, it would be nice to be able to use a USB and flash new firmware onto the car. The problems would be what would happen if someone badly flashed a car and the brakes failed and it killed someone.
