I own a 2015 GTI and will be selling my e90 in the near future (spring).
When I was looking to replace my BMW I really tried hard to find a car in the BMW line-up that was worth it for me. IMHO, the F3X cars have lost their edge in terms of chassis and overall driving enjoyment. They are no longer built for the enthusiasts that made BMW what it is. They are no longer considered the "standard" of excellence in the category. I couldn't see shelling out $48K for a 328i or $54K for a 340i when I was going to be let down. The only car that I really liked in the BMW lineup was an M3 and that was $65K (yes, all prices are as I would build them). For half (yes, half the price) I found a new GTI with lighting package and a 6-speed manual (see picks below). 1. It's not slow at all and no, an RDX is not quicker than it either. 2. There is more room in the back than you think, especially with the hatch. There isn't a sedan out there that will haul as much stuff in the back as this little hatch. I also take my 4yr old daughter and wife in the car all the time. No issues at all for room. We took it on vacation last summer as well and packed it full. 3. Aftermarket is alive and very well for this car. It is a little pocket rocket to start with, let alone if you do a Stage 1 tune. The bottom line is, I love this little car! So much fun running through the gears. Handling is very good for any car, let alone FWD (.93g stock), 34-35mpg on the highway is easy to achieve. When I'm done with the car (meaning, I don't every leave my cars stock and neither is my e90), I'll have about $10K in aftermarket parts. It'll be extremely street friendly, weigh about 3000lbs and have around 335hp.

The Focus RS really had my interest for a while, but the reviews of them aren't exactly stellar, and dealers are marking them up like crazy. The dealer group I work for has a Ford store, and they were going to mark it up 2 grand on me, even. Pass. |

If I could find another N54 E90 Sport Pkg car with good miles and in good shape, I'd be all over it. They're all either miled up, modded out, or priced through the roof for clean models. I've seen more 70,000+ mile cars for 22-23K than I count. That's just insane. On the M235i bit, it just doesn't really appeal to me a great deal. If I couldn't stretch to an M2, I'd pass. And the more I see on the M2, I'm not sure how much I like it, really. |

Do it. I had a Mk7 TDI that I sold for my M235i. My one caution is if you're tall like me your right leg has no comfy spot to sit on road trips; it's either your shin is rubbing by the shift on the center console or it's sitting up dangerously away from the pedals with cruise on. It was never an issue for me going around town but on road trips it'd get old really quick. That's what stopped me from getting a GTI or R when I was looking to replace the TDI.
On a side note, I've never been in a small car that my leg didn't rub somewhere. BMW knew about customers like me apparently since they put a padded thing perfectly where my leg rests on the center console. The Subaru BRZ I test drove had it too but it wasn't as well thought out (it was too low). |

I've said it a million times, the GTI is the best all-around car for the money... by a mile. I've had a Lotus, 135i, Audi S4, G35 Coupe, etc and the only car my wife was pissed that I sold is my 2008.5 GTI. It's just an absolute pleasure to drive and the fit and finish is great for the price point. It's not the fastest car on the road but I don't live my life a 1/4 mi at a time either - I drive 4 miles to the train station. If modding is your thing, short of a Jeep Wrangler, this car probably has the largest aftermarket I've come across.
Two thumbs WAY up for the GTI.

I've been thinking about dumping my M3 for a GTI. They are a great value for the money and with current discounts its even better.
I love the M3, but i'm thinking of making the change to bring up the travel budget and in prep for things that crawl.

On the right car, sure. There's just not much in my area, and I'm really picky. It's not 'fast'. But relative to other cars in the same segment, it's one of the quicker ones, but with substantially better build quality and refinement. |

On a side note, I'm shocked at the number of intelligent and positive responses here. Nice to see so many others bolster my impressions of the GTI.

Also a fan of the GTI, I owned an 1983, 2000, and then a 2006 A3 (essentially a GTI with a different body). One of the best values for the money, good space, mpg, running costs, and performance. Obviously won't keep up with an M3 but at less than half the price it does pretty well considering the money spent.

I owned a 2010 GTI for 5 years and they are awesome cars for the price. The mk7 gen are even nicer. Very nice lsd with the performance pack plus you get the Golf R brakes and a few other goodies. With a tune and downpipe those cars will run a mid to high 12 sec 1/4 mile all day making around 310whp. APR is about to release their bigger turbo (stage 3) set-up which is good for 500+ crank hp on stock internals.

Interesting discussion. The reviews are always great. But for some reason I can't get past the looks. Don't get me wrong it is one of the best looking hot hatches out there, but it just isn't for me.
