With a couple or exceptions that would blow the budget here.

I have a Springfield R.O. 9mm, its nice, but I really like my 1911s to be .45...or 10mm. I am so used to the recoil of the .45 that the 9mm 1911 slide feels odd to me, like its moving slow, hard to explain.

I was on a forum and others have felt the same and recommend a couple of spring weight changes, I didn't do it yet...I have a bunch of other toys to play with.

I could recommend a 9mm 1911 RO like Ken above has. That said, you can't go wrong with a a CZ75 P01. My buddy has one I shoot all the time and I love that gun. If it were me, though, I just bought a Sig P226 Legion SAO. That gun makes anyone a shooter. I mean, holy shit it's awesome. Fire a shot and the site picture barely moves there so little recoil. The trigger is the best short of my SA EMP4 Carry 9mm 1911. My Apex equipped G19 doesn't even compare to any of the aforementioned guns, but a wonderful tool it is.

Of everything I own, I think my CZ P06 Duty is my favorite. So easy to shoot and feels so good.

I would definitely side with the majority on here touting CZ pistols!

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have been reading to great things about the CZ Shadow 2. A bit out of the budget but may be worth the stretch.

I'll second the SIG Legion P226 SAO recommendation. It is like firing a laser beam. I also have a SIG P320 X5 and that too is a really fun pea shooter.

Ah yes, the TS. But that’s a Limited gun that sells over the OP’s budget. But it is indeed a sweet shooter.

I have a CZ-75 SP01 Tactical that I upgraded with several Cajun Gun Works parts and a CZ-85 trigger with over-travel adjustment. It shoots extremely well, and others that pick up and shoot the gun for the first time are able to get the best groupings out of any other handgun they shoot that day. However, if I could do it again, I would just get the Shadow. After all the upgrades I put into it, I could have afforded a Shadow to begin with. D'oh!

What do you mean by "target"? 25 yard bullseye or action shooting?

If you're thinking of doing bullseye, factory 9mm ain't gonna give you the groupings you want.

Either way, I would go with a 1911. Had a CZ 75 as my first gun and it was okay. Once you learned to shoot well and know what you want, nothing else shoots like a 1911.

I am going to say the Kahr CT9. Amazing trigger. Less than $450. Quality and value.

Wont offend you, but a pistol looks ridiculous with a laser. If you use it really for self defence try Tritium notch and bead sights, had them first onto my SIG 225 and wont miss them at the 229.

The mk25 has SigLite Night sights but I like having a powerful attached light for potential home invasion scenarios, esp with strobe and laser. Not sure the real effectiveness of the strobe but it is pretty disorienting
