Breaking-in procedure
Hey guys,
So I'm due to pick up my new 116i M Sport tomorrow and i've been doing a bit reading around on running in the engine (this will be my first new BMW). I know there are countless posts on this but most are just arguments between posters who all think they are right! Given that there a plenty of people on here picking up new BMW's what has been everyones approach to the run in? Follow the BMW guidelines to the letter or take a more aggressive approach? Cheers

I take the BMW rules to the letter, i don't want to end up with a "monday morning" car, and all kind of problems. I know people who break in their engine on an agressive style, saying the adaptive control will give them a faster car, but i am a little conservative on that, and take it easy, gradually increasing the load after the first 2000km's. I think it will adapt to my driving style then.

Maybe compare your new car and the demo car from dealer . You can notice the black smoke coming out usually as demo cars are trashed and not going through break in process properly .
I have followed their rule and argue with whoever says otherwise |

Demos get pushed pretty hard from cold which is their biggest issue. I am always gentle but keeping under 4k rpm the whole time is silly. Always let it warm up and don't wring it's neck too much. Otherwise the boredome will cost you more than the potential extra oil use in two years time

Cheers! Really enjoying it so far! My drive to work is about 10 miles so its getting decent enough heat cycle twice a day. Looking forward to opening her up on some of scotlands awesome highland roads once i've got everything nicely broken in.

Peace of mind
Following BMWs instructions gives you peace of mind, which in my opinion is worth a lot. I've run in a lot of new cars according to the guidelines and have never needed to add more than 500 ml of oil between service intervals.
