If it is a panel filter, no, because each one is designed for the specific airbox.
If it is an universal filter you need to experiment.

Does it only runs smoother with the BMC panel filter or has the sound of the engine improved?

I've recently installed a K&N panelfilter in my 118i.
The only difference it makes is a little more 'grunt' around 2200-3000 rpm.
I'm considering a different exhaust for next year.
Just want to keep things stock until the car is 2 years old and the warranty is expired.

Just a tip:
The N13B16 engine bay get's really hot and hot air kills performance.
A Cold Air Intake only works well when you can fit it really low in the engine bay close to the front where it gets lots of fresh air...far away from the turbo.
Also keep in mind that an open air filter close to the ground is going to collect more dust and dirt than a stock replacement filter.
So I choose the drop-in filter instead of the CAI.
