I asked my dealer about this. His answer: "Don't worry about it. The engines are good to go. Just make sure the engine is warm as you usually would and go for it."

What do others think? How important is the break in period?

I think the engineers in München know what the best way to break the engine in is. If there was no need to drive in a special way, they would not write it in the owners manual.

I am pretty sure the engine would survive being driven like you stole it as well, but it will not be the best solution in the long run.

I doubt the engineers write the owners manual. More likely the Lawyers do... and they are all about covering their asses...

Looks great, and cool pics. As for running in, well, I'm being conservative, and basically avoiding revving or overloading the engine for the first 2k. I'm nearly up to 900k, so it won't take long.

Yeah the good ol' run in period discussion. My friend you can no doubt find enough threads to keep you entertained. I was told by my dealer revving during run-in period is okay. In fact one of the sales guys rev very high, and in some video they rev (a Porsche I think) before it leaves the factory, albeit only once or twice.

Yes modern engines are really good, but I think they put that run in period thing in the manual for good reasons. Along with other things I plan on keeping my car for at least 10 years, so I follow the manual closely. I'd recommend follow the manual Just my 2 cents.

Very nice photos and a pretty car btw

If you don't drive the car in a spirited manner from day 1, it won't reach its full potential. I'm not suggesting you thrash it, but mix your driving up a bit, and allow the engine to flex its muscles now and then. I've had no issues with previous cars, and the guy who bought my 125i coupe a couple of years ago assumed I'd tuned it because it "went harder than others" that he'd driven. It wasn't tuned, it was simply driven the way it was built to be driven.

I've had my M135i for a week now and I've driven it in Eco Pro a bit, Comfort mostly, and have given it quite a few squirts in Sports mode on the freeways, taking it over 4000 RPM.

Ask anyone who is into racing or builds engines and they'll give you the same advice. It's a performance car - don't treat it like a Prius and it won't act like one.

I finally got over this whole breaking in thing. I think it's about revving in moderation. I've done about 500km in my car now and I've kept it under 5000rpm 99% of the time. Once in a while, only when the engine is warm, I'll punch it over that and I've already redlined the thing about 5 times.
My thinking is, what's the worst that could happen? Is the car going to blow up?

I'll only keep the car for three years anyway. After that, it's someone else's to worry about. But that's what happens when you buy a second hand car. I've never had an issue with any I've bought and I couldn't guarantee the original owner didn't thrash the crap out of it either.

I'm not redlining it, but I'm certainly letting it take some good, deep breaths from time to time, as I run up and down through the gears and carve some corners. Not too often, though....as the sound becomes quite addictive

Hi Boutan
Congrats on the new ride
INFO for all
BMW's engine manufacturing facility electrically runs all engines up to max revs before they are installed into the car, so it is feasible to drive a new BMW without running it in.
HOWEVER
The engineer recommends that these new engine should be kept under 5000 RPM max for extended periods within the first 10 hours.

My 125i was just unloaded of the ship...

Thanks to Cozza's tip earlier in this thread just got to see the ship with my car (Sunshine Ace) depart Melbourne for Port Kembla. Just thought I'd pop on the site to see if the ship was still unloading.......and there it is sailing down the channel heading out....

At least a few more sleeps and the car will be on the dock! Then we'll see how long it takes for customs, and the dealer.....
