I do like Aussie reviews; that's a great read.

Thanks for sharing. Shame the M135i driver in the video didn't appear to know you could manually control gear selection in the automatic. Or did he think the paddles were fancy volume controls?

Our car reviewers here in Australia are a pretty motley crew these days! Interestingly, they've kept the M135i on as a long term er, and they are starting to suggest it's the "the best BMW performance car ever".

I read that and agreed with them

I think the M135i's suspension tune and level of refinement seem to really suit our roads and journeys.

Interesting that the Golf R(albeit the estate) doesn't get much praise; over here I'm convinced VW is lobbing backhanders to various mags (except What Car which still thinks the M135i is the best premium hot hatch), especially Evo magazine which couldn't get enough of the M135i then suddenly got bored of it and slated it.

They did exactly the same with my old mk4 Golf R32. It's got so bad, I don't read it any more.

The Golf is a competent machine for the money, with few flaws. It is a bit too boring to appeal to most enthusiasts looking for something special, but most people don't care about that. That is why it sells so well.

No doubt it's good but I know of a fair few who have got shot of them sharpish for various reasons, one being that "boring" thing you mention. Plus build quality issues.
I notice Top Gear is finally admitting it has a few flaws too; reluctant DSG box, rattles and shakes, etc. Nothing against competition to the M135i; it's very healthy. But when the media just seem to be plain wrong, it's irritating.

That review seems fair and balanced for once.

Still love ours and it still makes me grin two years after it arrived. It's a keeper.

Great read. Different characters and different bodies, but overall a good comparative test.

"Month: One
Liked: The grunt. It's got some
Disliked: Variable steering darty off-centre, taking some getting used to
Favourite Moment: Freeway on-ramp, getting reminded how much snot this thing has"

Totally agree, freeway on ramp is a highlight nearly every time I drive mine, just love it.

I actually like the darty off-centre due to the fast rack and variable steering

It will be interesting to see their long term comments in month 4, once you understand what's in your hands and under your foot it is a dream to drive.

Looks like the new Focus RS is about to shake things up; very good reviews.
Not my cup of tea but I'm planning on testing one for a bit of fun.

I think variable steering is one of the most enjoyable things in tne car. Not only everyday parking but every tight corner is a joy doing a one hand steering turn. At first is strange because it makes the steering very quick in the turn and feels different from the standard flat ratio steering. But in the end I think is more effective and more fun

So what are the ratios anyway? I have the regular steering rack, and when I drive cars with the variable rack, they feel slower around the center.

We hated the steering on our test drive! After our non electric assisted E91 335d, it felt light and artificial. But the rest of the car was good enough to overlook it; now totally used to it. Two turns lock to lock is pretty direct.
