F20 tailgate rattle

Anyone had any experiences of dealer repairs for rattling hatch, sounds like something loose in back. I managed to get rid of it most of the time by putting insulating tape around catch and putting polish on the rubbers, only problem was hatch wouldn't open not ideal but trying to prove where noise coming from. Technicians agree its not right. Third time its been into the dealers they've had it for 4 days this time and say they cant get rid of it up to now, Ive refused to accept the car back until Ive road tested it after fix, but they aren't anywhere near. Ive got a 16 plate 1 series and the hatch doesn't rattle, mines only just gone 1year old and has just under 5K on the clock. Any comments appreciated.

Just check it's not the hatch cover (parcel shelf) causing the rattle. Mine does this if the cover is not properly seated in the clips behind the rear seat back.

it might be because you are driving on very bumpy roads,in the honda jazz for instance if you drive with it over railway tracks or very bumpy roads the cover tends to make noises

Is it during regular drive or when you are driving at bumpy roads?

Also by rattle, what kind of a rattle noise? For example i hear a metalic "bang" sound when the road kinda "jumps" and when i am driving a bit "fast". Like if the trunk door closing in a short distance (i think it does actually. a few MM's.)

tailgate rattle

I've tried driving with the shelf and the boot space cover removed to eliminate these. Its as if the tailgate isn't closed with the odd rubber squeak thrown in as if the tailgate was moving or twisting, Its definitely the tailgate where the noise is. The only roads it doesn't rattle on are on the better smooth motorway roads which I rarely use. Also the courtesy car they gave me, exact same model as mine but 16 plate instead if 15 plate doesn't rattle on exactly the same roads. Car has been in since wed last. Its been all around the garage and they agree about the noise but cant seem to cure it, once you get fixated on something it starts to become a lot bigger issue to you.
Cheers

Maybe it just needs some adjustment.

I think it needs more than a adjustment, Ive been informed by my dealer that they have sent a video to BMW technical dept who are very interested as they have had a rare case where some spot weld on C pillar ? has caused an issue. Anyhow my dealer isn't able to go any further with this and is awaiting squeaky boot department to get back in touch. I may be sounding flippant but it stops me getting vexed, but if they cant sort it who can.

We had the same problem - it's the tailgate. When you open the boot there's two little stoppers above the headlights on the bodywork. Just unscrew these out some more (you may need a pair of grips/pliers as they are quite hard to turn) and it should sort the problem.

hi i have a 120d m sport drive 5 door i have had nothing but trouble since i got it its a 15 plate i had it from new the noise started on the b pillar which then they put a foam in there and then the noise has now moved to c pillar they have padded the roof lining out as well as replaced the boot catch as well as many others possible culprits of the noise but still no luck its now got 16k on the car and they are no closer i have now refused to have any more work carried out to it and that i have told them that BMW need to replace the car as its of unsatisfactory quality and that i should not have had all this trouble its been to a body shot 5 times for panel re-allignment and everything and still no results, my car was made on the 9th February 2015 if you can find the date on the drivers door near the catch mechanism its engraved in the paint work this could be a coincidence but our cars could of been made roughly the same time or day, they have suggested spot welds being missed but this got brushed over as it could of been a lot of trouble getting repaired

Legal rights/Compensation for tailgate issues

I must admit I'm not too happy with the roof lining etc being removed, I will check the number but at the moment BMW have my car, I know I wont be happy with it even when it comes back. Does anyone know what our legal rights are regarding these types of issues ie refusing repairs, compensation etc.

Why are you even thinking of going legal surly let BMW repair the issue and see how it works out?

Last year my 116i was replaced with new due to on going problems. The replacement 116i has been perfect.

Tailgate rights

I am letting them repair the car to see what happens, but this is the 3rd attempt so its not as if I'm not giving them a fair chance, Did they replace your car at their offer or because you weren't satisfied with attempted repairs. but I just wanted to know how I stood if all fails, believe me I want this to work.

Thanks I have looked at this before, BMW say the tailgate rattle is sorted? with a new lock etc, I have test driven it yet so don't know. Its the other issue with broken welds I am really concerned about, thanks for your info. I've had no feedback since last Friday, I need to get an update today.

still no joy

BMW still got my car, they cant find welds they need to repair, but I'm not too bothered at the minute they keep giving me different cars to drive, X3's 420Msport convertible. Tried to get a M2 or 3 but that was pushing it a little bit but we can only try. Probably wont get it back this week so here's hoping for some sunshine.

BMW dealer offered the replacement after my 8th visit in for repair.

Many thanks, hopefully it doesn't go on till then but we are only at 3rd attempt, but the interior is out and they are shall we say discussing who is to sort it the body shop or the work shop and where the faulted welds are , I have said that if for any reason the paintwork had to be touched, then they stop and we need to discuss this as I wouldn't be prepared to accept that.

so have they ruled for sure that it's faulted welds?

They say they can replicate the noise by inserting a screwdriver and flexing the pillar. I'm not too sure even what they are looking at, C pillar doesn't mean a great deal to me. But they say BMW technical have told them that they have had instances where the spot welds have either not been welded or have broken. In answer to your question it hasn't been confirmed yet but that is what they are looking to as a likely cause
