As many of us know already, the next generation 1-series (internal chassis codename F20) has been testing for some time now and has been in the wintery European north for cold climate testing. While its no secret that the next generation 1-series would likely get a 135i variant this is the first time that we are seeing a dual exhaust on the car on separate sides similar to other cars in the BMW range such as the 335i and 535i. This may simply be a move to bring the 135i exhaust setup closer inline with those cars or may in fact represent a hotter car such as a 135is model. Compare with previously seen spyphotos which clearly had the dual exhaust cutout in the rear bumper but without both pipes in place. Something has changed in the wintery north

Looks like a very nice and practical car, which might be used on ice and snow, so it is good to see that it is tested on the white stuff.

It would be cool if we'd get another shooting brake designed M out of this model, alla Z3 M Coupe.

Yes, yes it would! I need to replace mine with something, and not much is doing it for me at the moment. I'd love a 5 door 1er, but BMW USA seems to think I should have an X1. No thanks.

Related to the mule above, I hate that exhaust, I hated the similar setup on the E46 M3. Why add a longitudinal muffler with outlets on each side? I don't really care for dual sided exhaust on straight sixes (even though my M Coupe and 335i's have it) but vastly prefer separate resonators to a single, longitudinal one like shown. Otherwise, the car looks like a nice replacement to the existing 1er 5 door, now let's get it here (0% chance acknowledged).

i like the idea of 335/535 style dual exhaust...would also make a quad conversion very easy

Except if you look at the pictures, it's not that style of exhaust. Rather than splitting in front of the differential and running two distinct paths, it's just a single rear can with pipes sticking out of each side. Further, why would quads be cool in a six cylinder? They make sense on V8's, but seem ridiculous on sixes.

NO WAY GUYS. THIS IS NOT THE 135i. IT DOES NOT HAVE I6 but FI I4 AROUND 250 HP. THE NEXT 1 SERIES F20 WILL NO MORE HAVE I6, BUT ONLY I4.

I guess you think this is a 135i bc of the dual exhaust pipes?

I'd guess it could be just about anything, dual pipes wouldn't really indicate much of anything. To be honest, I'd think that an all four cylinder line up would be nice, and leave room for a nice, light weight 1er and allow a little separation from the 3er, something that's currently somewhat lacking.

Just for the record, I still hate the exhaust, even if it's got 1,200hp.

No! . . . This is not the first time we are seeing a dual exhaust on the car on separate sides! . . . It's already been there on test since September, 09

From the 1st spy pics I noticed the right exhaust cut in the rear bumper. I realized then there's will be a dual side exhaust for the 1 series!

Besides the dual exhausts... you have to do what every car guy in Germany does - when checking out a cool car thats been de-baged.

You gotta look at the exhaust first, then the big brake rotors/calipers, then the inside of the car. Since we can't look inside all that well (say at the speedo/tacho) - when you look at the big brakes (front & rear) on this test mule, its safe to say its got some serious PS under the hood.

IF I had to take a guess I'd say this was a 130i. And not a 135i. mainly bc I see no FMIC and the front brake calipers look medium in size. And the rear brake calipers look tiny - even though the rear rotors are big!

so are we supposing the F20 designation is for the 5 doors? and coupes (and or sedans?) wont be released for some time?

also no news regarding powerplant? im still banking on a TT I4. but even moreso i hope they stick to the original rumors of removing weight starting with the chassis.

edit: i sincerely apologize - i didnt realize there was a whole subforum for the f20 and was just doing searches. otherwise i wouldnt have bumped such an old thread with no info sorry
