Potenza to PSS?

First off pardon my stupidity, but can someone clear me up about the whole tyre upgrade process. I went to a small independent tyre shop the other day to ask about swapping my tyres over to Michelin Pilot Super Sport. He said he didn't know if he could as he didn't know if the PSS are runflat. He'd ring and find out but never got back to me. Currently I have Bridgestone Potenza S001 RunFlat, fronts are R18 225/40, rear are 245/35
I just want to know if I can put PSS straight onto my current rims or do I have to change the rims as well?? I'm confused about the whole runflat part. Thanks for any info and help...

as far as I know there is no reason why you need to change your wheel. Should be able to do it straight away. Some countries I am led to believe have the option of runflat or normal but in Australia we only get runflats

Yes, you can install normal tyres on wheels that support runflat tyres. In some countries runflats are mandatory due to some roadside assistance program. If you go for normal tires, you will also want to bring some tools to allow yourself to be able to cope with a puncture.

Just one last question, am I wise sticking with replacing with exactly the same dimension tyres, or going for a square setup? I seriously have no freakin idea what I'm talking about it when it comes to tyres/offsets etc etc, so any guidance appreciated...

Go with standard dimensions. Take into consideration that the rear wheels are a bit wider than the front wheels.

I disagree. Go for a square setup for practical reasons and even better balance. Some of the wheel sets from the factory are also square.

Greater margin on runflats, he just trying to give them the hard flog.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the rims I have? They're not written on them anywhere I can see. All the options list says is - 18"M LT/ALY STAR SP. 386 M/MT
I have no intention of changing the rims, so if the rims aren't square (judging by the size of tyres on there now) I guess cant go for a square setup anyway.

You can also run a square tyre setup even if the rear wheels are slightly wider, but it takes away some of the advantage.

Since I could import them from the US for half the price I decided to go with stock sizes ovekvam. Just arrived, yay...

Please post your experience with conventional tyres and how does it feel against runflats.

I had PSS for 2 years on my M3 previous to buying this 125i. That's why I'm changing, because the PSS are a far better tyre compared to the Potenza RF. The grip levels on PSS are nuts, I remember in my M3 I could throw it into corners and the car would go round like it was on rails, where other tyres would just lose grip and slide.
I have read they are not ideal for colder climates though, I imagine because the outer tread area (the section that handles most of your cornering work) doesn't work up to temperature. Although that probably applies to a lot of performance tyres. You being situated in Athens should be spot on, similar climate to where I am. If you're in the right climate I think an upgrade to PSS is an essential mod

Off to get them fitted in an hour...

Tyres have just been swapped over. Thoughts. From the day I got this car there has always been something about the cars ride that has annoyed the hell out of me, and because of that it also lessened my confidence in the cars grip. I just found confirmed what I thought it was, its those damn Potenzas! After swapping to the PSS the horrid ride of the Potenzas is now gone. My last car was an M3 with PSS, before that a ClioSport 182 with PS2's, so as I cant remember a car before that with runflats, I'm not sure if the horrendous ride applies to just the Potenzas or RF's in general. Anyways, now the car has a nice compliant ride, soaks up little bumps without transmitting every single little jolt back through the steering wheel and generally is just far more connected to the road. The front end now has bite as well instead of feeling vague and skittish. Two BIG thumbs up for the Michelins

and good riddance to the Potenzas...
I've now just been for a longer drive, heaps more grip on the PSS both on turn in and booting it out of corners, far more pleasant ride, car is so much more planted, all good all round. Tick that one off as sorted, now onto next mod...
