Scott please tell us what has fundamentally changed within BMW's engineering philosophy? Based on the article ovekram has posted the new FWD models will be dynamically compromised and not as good as they could be if they were developed to use RWD.

I think my favourite bmw ever. I just read this months BMWCAr mag with 3 gen of M3 and I look at the E46 and go straight to autotrader to try and find a mint CS model.

BMw has the bluprints for it, all they needed was update the interior and the exterior design and put it on the market. It would kill

Oh my God!
I knew it, I knew that BMW would not take long to offer a competitor to the A3 sedan and CLA.
The fight for the glory of continued sales! He is strong!

I currently have a '13 Mini GP and while it is a great car, it reminds me why I'll never buy a FWD car again. Three words: Annoying Torque Steer

Yes its FWD but with xDrive also.

The front and rear end looks something like this. And will be available as a Sport hatch also.
Man, that would've been super sweet 8~11 years ago.

Looks like BMW is trying to capitalize on the HOT-hatch market in the US, even though for years, made excuses for not bringing them over...(M135i anyone..?). Not to mention, all the Wagons BMW has kept on their side of the pond. Now BMW can't afford to skip the US hatchback market..?

Congratulation!

But has physics changed much since then? BMW has used decades to convince us that rear wheel drive is superior to front wheel drive, and now that we are convinced, you want to sell FWD?

The Z3 sounds promising. I hope it will be small.

That also means BMW cars were 20x better to drive.

FWD is the choice due to the progressive development of the market.
Premium Compact Cars are in demand and competition is high. In order to appeal to customers the product must be competitive.
Some of these customers are not enthusiasts. Many would simply chose because of connectivity or style which shows how progressive the world and market has become.

Cars in the compact segment have to be competitive in anyway possible. To achieve space and flexibility requirements demanded by customers then they must be FWD. Sharing with MINI increases the profit margin and is cost effective for further applications across the architecture.

Of course its about profit the company still needs to make money and survive in a highly contested market. And these compact models bring in huge profits Besides the profits must come in to bring a further radical M3 or something else.

Who cares if they're going fwd thats only one 1 series, the basic cars. If they're going to move from the rwd platform they'll probably just go to awd/xdrive, just look at the i8. You dont have to buy a 1 series, they'll have something for everyone. And they're going to have xdrive 1er anyway so np.

Honestly I'd rather BMW stop making the M3 and instead make a small RWD sedan.

So bmw wants to compete by using similar drive trains? Why not crush the competition with rwd. It's not like theirs R/D to be done for a rwd driveline. I don't get this at all. I was kind of excited hoping it would be a 2 series sedan and it's not.

I care because there will no longer be a BMW that suits my requirements. I want RWD (X-drive is not nearly as fun to drive) in a small and practical car. That is why I drive an F20. The 3-series is too large. I would not mind the FWD cars if they didn't take away my RWD alternative.

those 'basic cars' like the RWD 1-series have been THE MOST enjoyable and fun BMWs that have been made in the last 10 years. everything else has become bloated and plump. Now that the 1-series is moving to an uninspiring format if FWD, we are left with no options. The latest 3-series is waaaaay too plump and soft.

This sums up my feelings. F21 M135i arriving in two weeks so going to hang on to that until my requirement is for something bigger... which clearly won't be a new 1er in the future based on this.

sorry but that just sounds like those pre programmed press releases. Show some honesty and say it as it really is. Audi sells more cars without putting half as much dynamic development that bmw. What bmw needed to realize is that the 1er is plain ugly. THAT is why the A3 sells more. make a good design inside out, keep rwd and it will sell. just make it look good

They are still using this type of advertisements until now
I still don't like FWD BMW or xDrive 1 Series, by the way will it have the front fascia of the 1 hatchback? or the 2 coupe?

I think the FWD BMWs will be a success because most of BMW buyers do not care about whether it is a FWD or a RWD. They just love the brand, the name..
Sad but true. Most people do not know how their cars work!
I can't imagine a FWD BMW

What I don't understand, what's the difference between this 1 Series Sedan and the future 4-door 2 Series?
maybe more confusion like the 4 Series Gran Coupé compared to the 3 Series?

So with no sightings of z3/5 mules or anything, does the E89 have another model year to go? I.e. A 2016 model 35i/is? Or will there be a 2016 Z4M with S55 to end the E89 run? Thanks

I think the bottom end of the product range is a bit crowded.

FWD 1 series sedan and wagon, plus AWD derivative
RWD 2 series coupe, convertible, plus AWD derivative
FWD 2 series MPV, plus AWD derivative

Is there going to be a FWD coupe too??
