Lol. Well, my wife rented me a race prepped 430 for 16 laps a couple of years ago on my birthday. So there is hope.

In LA you go to the jewelry district. You dont buy name brand unless it's from deBeers. Since they get first pick and everyone else picks from the same left over pot.
$20k for mine.

Size is what matters. Clarity is sooo stupid. There is a reason you have to use a loop to see the flaws. Just get above a caret.
Also don't go to one of those huge jewlery stores(Zales for instance) they are horribly overpriced. You will get more for your money at a normal jewelry store.

Ours was a custom job based on the Harry Winston design below but with a 1.5 carat cushion cut main stone (not pink - excellent cut) and exactly 200 small stones on the supports:

Not following the "only worry about the size"
Go to BlueNile - http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-o...track=rotator1 Filter the size from .9 to 1.1 and they have over 17,000 diamonds. Good cut (worst they sell), Color J (worst they sell), Clarity SL2 (worst they sell) - size is .9 - price of $2,700 Do the opposite - Sig Ideal cut, Color D, Clarity FL - size of 1.1 - price of $27,000 I agree the best is overkill but I have a hard time believing every bottom rating for the C's isn't going to look significantly worse. Some minimum needed for really just buy the worst, biggest diamond you can afford.

I bought the engagement ring and wedding band from a big store (ShaneCo), but I sourced the diamond separately to avoid the markup those stores have on their diamonds.
My priority order was carat and cut, then color, and finally clarity. 1.5 to 2 carat seems to be the sweet spot for a good sized stone. It's not too small and not so big it looks like costume jewelry. Probably a little variance here depending on the setting. As others have said, cut is important as that determines the how light passes thru the stone and thus the sparkle. Along with getting what jewelers consider "ideal" or "excellent" cut, also check the HCA score. It takes cut one step further to measure the dimensions of the stone to determine brilliance. (http://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca) Color is relative. I prefer a colorless stone (F or better), but G-H-I are almost colorless if mounted in a white metal setting. Yellow gold tends to bring out the color in a diamond a little more. Clarity is important to a point. I went with "eye clean" which is generally SI1 or better. Basically this means you can't see the inclusions without a loupe.

My fiance didn't want me to spend tons of money on a ring, and she prefers vintage/art-deco everything. I gave her my great-grandmother's ring (with a new shank that was created to match the design), and she can't stop staring at it. We've been engaged for a month now and she still stares at the ring, can't stop telling me how much she loves it, and how protective she is of the ring.
It doesn't match her art-deco style, but it's very, very vintage and has history to it. She told me that when I asked her to marry me, she really couldn't care what the ring looked like, it was not her focus at the moment. If she's the one, she'll want to marry you because of your relationship, the ring is just something pretty to show her friends and family. That doesn't mean you're going to stop worrying about what it looks like, but you should feel confident about your proposal.

Based on this thread, looks like my outlook is still not the norm.
People still emphasize size and the "no one can tell" mindset. Again, no one can tell if it's a cubic zirconia either. All that matters is that YOU and your SO know it's an amazingly rare and gorgeous diamond. If you just want a big fat rock that looks decent, seriously, get a fake diamond. You'll need a jeweler to even tell you it's not real. |
