What about Race Chip Power Box for 116i?
Hi all,
While i was searching through internet i just found this performance box below; http://www.racechip.de/en/chiptuning/bmw/1er/116i-100kw.php The output numbers seem enough for me,but here comes the question; May this powerbox ( and also the brand ), be reliable and harmless as reputable tuners' power boxes such as Hartge,Hamann,AC Schnitzer or Kelleners ? Has anyone tried this product before? To be honest,i am very decesive about power upgrading of 116i,at least to 118i limits.. Thanks for your valuable comments..

I am very skeptical on these modifications...I trust only the reputable tunners. Maybe this company is reputable, I do not know, however I have never heard of them.

I have never heard of this company to be honest. I checked out their website and I got to say it looks quite decent to me. I know most people say that powerboxes are BS, but this seels to work in a different way than most others. Also, it will only work when the engine needs the extra power and not when its running stationary.
I tried looking up some user experience on google and found only 3 users that had actually bought and used it. All 3 were very positive about it! One guy put in in an Opel Astra ant drove more than a year with it without any problems and he was very pleased about it. Another guy used it on a Fiat Punto I think and also had no problems and quite some extra torque. The last guy actually used it in an BMW E46, also, no problems. All the negative responses I read were from people that had never used it, so probably a mot of people are just very skeptical about powerboxes. But anyway, I think that for this price, you might aswell try it. Its really quite cheap! Should you start getting motor problems, you should (and you can!) immediately remove the box whitch is a pro of this system as it leaves no traces in the engines ECU. If you do decide to give it a try, can you please comment on it? Also after +1000Km and a few months of using it. Thanks!

But still i can not trust this brand and i will wait for a while.. By the way, I heard that, evotech has started to tune upgrades via OBD.. With 176 ps and apprx. 280 nm output after tuning.. Sounds perfect!! Isn't it?

If you change the engine mapping or manipulate signals, the factory warranty is void. When the tuning comes from reputable tuners, they will usually take over the warranty, though.

Our upgrade increases power to 200hp and comes with a 2 year warranty on the engine/drivetrain, extendable to 3 years (from when the car was new).

1. For the 118i, after the upgrade the power is rated 204 hp. Is that power at the flywheel or power at the wheels? Some people have been getting around 170-180 whp on the dyno with factory-default 118i's so I'd like to clear that out, please. 2. How is the upgrade performed? Is it a piggyback unit, or is it another ECU altogether? I'm asking because I'm in Brazil, so I need to know what is the installation procedure like, to see where I could get this service done. 3. Last, and depending on the answer above, do you ship to Brazil, and would I still be covered by your warranty if I decide to get the upgrade? Thanks a lot! Cheers! |

1. At the flywheel, the same way the standard car is measured at 170hp.
2. Piggyback unit, takes around 1.5 hours to fit and we'd recommend professional installation. 3. Yes and yes.

1. The gearing in the 116i is different than the 118i, so maybe one more gear change is needed. 2. The BMW figures are a bit on the optimistic side, whereas the ACS ones are more realistic. 3. More power mean more wheel spin, so it is difficult to launch from 0 km/h.

The 116i with manual transmission can do 0-100 km/h with only one gear change.
The official 0-100 times are realistic. It states 8.5 seconds for the 116i, and our stock 116i does it in 8.4 seconds. (Tested with logger connected to OBD2-port). ACS has answered about the 0-100 times before, and explained that it was difficult to launch the car off the line. |

The power delivery of the tuned motors are different due to how far you can adjust some of the parameters from standard using AC Schnitzer's tuning system.
Details of both are here, but as I've said before - you don't buy a 116 to go drag racing so don't get obsessed about 0-60 times. In reality the tuned 116 pulls hard all through the rev range. I've been in one with AC Schnitzer test driver Manfred Wollgarten behind the wheel and I can tell you it was pretty impressive for a 1.6 turbo! ACS 116 performance ACS 118 performance

I'm asking this because I'm very interested in the upgrade but like him I also live in Brazil and I understand it will be very difficult, if possible at all, for you to cover my warranty from the UK for obvious reasons. Thanks |

It is obvious and it's not designed to be removed quickly. Our warranty operates worldwide through the BMW dealer network so if there is a problem with the engine or drivetrain that BMW decide is down to the tuning your dealer will be able to claim for their time and parts through AC Schnitzer Germany, no matter which country you bought the upgrade from.
