Experience with Hartge tuning for 116i?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi, I'm seriously considering to increase the motor power on my 116i. But due to motor warranty issues, I'm considering to go for Hartge. What I'm looking for is a better acceleration form 0-100, but unfortunately Hartge doesn't specify the acceleration from 0-100, but only 0-200 km/h. Does anyone have a idea why Hartge doesn't specify the 0-100 acceleration? Could It be that the improved acceleration from 0-100 is insignificant and almost the same?? I's there anyone out there who have tried the tuning for real?
Also, i's there anyone who knows how the tuning kit is installed, ie. is it done locally by Hartge or are you supposed to do it yorself?

Here is the Hartge video from 0-200 km/h for the BMW 116i:

use the pause / play button on the video and calculate the time difference from the start of acceleration up to 100kmh...

It should be 0:16-0:08=0:08seconds!

And since this not a proper time measurement method, the time should be between 0:08-0:09.
No big diferrence from 116i untuned!
What do you think?

I guess 100-200 is a lot about power, while 0-100 is more about driver skill and willingness to abuse the gearbox and tires. But if 0-200 is signficantly faster after tuning, 0-100 will also be significantly faster with the same driving skill.

I've been thinking about the Hartge tuning box for my 125d because it seems a much better tuning box than all the cheaper solutions. I like the way it only adds extra power when the throttle is pushed beyond 70% and the way it is connected to 5 sensors instead of the usual 1 or 2.

However you have to really want it at the price they charge. They want around £2,000 to fit the tuning box to my F20! I think the 116i box is still £1600.

If you want to increase the performance of your 116i look to having the same exhaust as the 118i fitted to it when you fit the chip. It should increase the output significantly as BMW use smaller exhaust to detune the 116i against the 118i and the same goes for 125i against the 328i.
I would wait unti the M tune chips arrive early next year as it keeps it all under warrantee.

Hi AusF20, Thanks for info!! -aha,so thats the trick, so the enignes of the 116i and 118i are almost identical, but the exhaust systems are not? -Is it the full exhaust, or just at part of the exats system that I need to replace? You also mention the M tune chips...have you any web links?

I think the down pipe is slightly different, but otherwise the engines are the same. I think the main difference in performance comes from the engine mapping.

But then again maybe the difference in performance is smaller than stated by BMW. I had my 116i on the dyno. It was supposed to have 136 hp on the flywheel, but had 139 hp on the rear wheels!

Couple of days ago I installed Hartge engine upgrade for 116i and Im really sattisfied. Car is more agresive especially above 60kmh, there is no turbo gap or lag so it continuously accelerates. And Im pretty sure it runs even better then 118i

No turbo lag? I don't think they can do much about the lag with these boxes. My 116i has tons of turbo lag.

Here is a video of a stock 116i vs. a Hartge tuned one.

It says in the video that the stock car has 126 hp. BMW claims 136. In reality, it is probably even more. I had our 116 on the dyno, and it measured 139 hp at the rear hubs, which indicates something like 150 hp at the flywheel. That would explain why a 170+ hp car doesn't stretch out more of a lead in the video.

Its a typo error ....my friend who did the editing is has been already punished!!

None of the cars was dynoed, so we do not know the exact hp. One is stock (so 136 acclaimed) and the other is with the Hartge tuning box.

Before I installed Hartge unit mine akso had lots of turbo lag, but right now with hartge I have constant acceleration and Im really impressed with it. The engine runs more smoothly and dtiving in comfort feeks like driving in sport on stock 116i.

Hey Fanis I have to say that your video and the videos from Hartge convinced me to order and install this unit instead of Kelleners sport and AC Shnitzer and many other cheaper boxes. Altough AC Shnitzer claimed getting 204hp I still decided to go for Hartge. One thing they told me from Hartge even after I already bought the unit is that 116i with Hartge actually runs better then 118i.

Thanks for the comments!

We wanted to have a 118i the day we did this video, but my friend with the 118i could not make it.

I want to do the same with AC Schnitzer box, but there is no 116i in Athens with the AC tune and auto box. Maybe the AC is indeed better...but also it is twice the price!!

I had my 118d remapped, was the joy to drive, mad a big difference and was never found by BMW when in the garage. Sold it with no problems and was still within warranty. It also was in the garage 3 times to get the DOF changed and no one said a thing about a chip.

Had a tuning box on my 123d and it made a difference but I get the feeling it harmed the engine??

But it's up to you. At least you can take the box out.

Yes AC Schnitzer is quite more expensive ( had an offer from Serbia, 2.200Euro) with installation. Its quite expensive. Anyways do you have any experience with some performance exhausts? Thats my new project. Supersprint performance exhaust has done a nice job and I think they are not that expensive. Also Eissenmann has a nice offer.
