Oil Change Experience Mobil vs. Castrol

Mobil1 0W-40 vs. Castrol 5W-30 (factory)

Absolutely can't feel any difference. Test conditions: daily traffic slow going agony & illegal highway grand prix going to 190 km/h . 30~35 degree Celsius and 80% up humidity (rainy season here).

Our Costco carries Mobil1 0W-40, so cheaper, and hence the switch BMW LL-01 certified of course

Just thought to share me experience

I am running Castrol 0W-30 LL04, which is also supposed to be the factory oil.

I'm running Shell 5W-40 Ultra, notice that the engine runs smoother. Performance is slighty better than the original stuff from the factory. The Shell oil isn't cheap but better than Royal Purple or Peaklo (Suppose to the best oils for performance).

I only fill up my tank with Shell V-Power Ultra patrol, hence I decided to use their oil too.

In Taiwan they're making a deal out of these LL01 vs LL04. For us anyways they're saying yes you can use LL04 for gasoline engines, but LL01 is preferred for gasoline engine. LL04 is for diesel engines.

I don't know why that is so, but I've heard enough to steer clear of LL04 based purely on perception, just for your reference.

You may be surprised, but you are one of the very few people who raised no doubt when I told that I can't feel the difference between these two and

I am surprised indeed. In my previous car (Z4) I have tried like 4-5 different oils (top quality, all LL-04) and I noticed no difference. In thw 116i I have tried only Castrol Edge FST 5w-30 and 0w-30 and again there is no noticable difference.

In Norway I think they say use LL04 for oil changes on petrol engines, but you can use LL01 for emergency top ups...

I agree with Fanis. I think any sense of change when a different oil is used, provided it is a recommended grade for the engine, is purely a placebo effect. In more than 25 years of car ownership, including competition, I've never seen a change between major brands oils of the same grade result in any measurable performance improvement. Of course, an engine will always feel and perform slightly better with clean oil and -- especially -- a clean filter. But between brands of the same grade...nada!

this is interesting
I have always think that oil is one of the more noticeable change you can do to your car
I have been driving BMWs for over 10 years now and I have used all kinds of premium oil
I now settle for Red Line, Royal Purple being my next choice, Shell, Mobil are fine and they are similar, and Castro is last on my list (dont be tricked into these Pakelo or some obscure brands if you plan to push you car...)
the thing about oil is that of course you get the initial "feel" or smoother and more responsive throttle
but you also need to pay attention to how durable it is, while most larger brands are very durable, like Shell, Mobil, they usually offer slightly less performance
after years of oil changes I personally think that Red Line has the best balance(I usually change my oil every 5000-8000km so I dont need super durable oil)

if you can feel the difference between fresh oil and worn oil then you can feel the difference between oils

what is everyone "feeling" between oils? harder to depress the accelerator pedal?

if oil dictated performance that much it would also dictate CO2 emissions and fuel economy?

I can not tell the difference between used and new oil from the drivers' seat in new cars. In some older cars I could hear the difference, due to noisy hydraulic tappets in the engine, particularly during cold starts.

It is also possible to feel the difference between different types of gearbox oils when it is cold outside.

I have 5 years service/warranty included, so I will run on the recommended Castrol oil.
