Took me a while to go looking for one on the 120d, yes it's still there, thank god. Still miss having a coolant temp guage though but reading above makes it easier to move on. I'll still allow the engine to idle for a while after coming off a motorway at services etc as it is second nature after the last 12 years and can't hurt.

I keep disabling the start stop function as it's annoying, especially when I forget to do it LOL.

I lol'd at the testing phase marked "Maniac" westphone nice one.

Hee hee.

I got this ELM 327 dongle, and together with this "Torque" application on a smart phone you can see all sorts of information on there. I pulled water temp. but couldn't pull oil temp or maybe I didn't wait long enough. I got bored two times and it sits in my glove compartment.

My 116i with piggy bag, the recently long trip the oil temp wat at 130 degrees after I drove over 300 km. cruise control on at 130 km/h. And I'm afraid it might keep going up so I decided to turn of cruise control and the oil temp was up and down but never go over 130 degrees.

Is it normal?

Some friends would always ask and worry if they should put a fan to cool their modified Impreza after a spirited driving session.

However, either the truck or the Impreza have oil and water temperature gauges, so the driver would know how they're doing. Not in our cars, I do not understand why. I believe they are just as relevant as ever.

My dealership told me to just drive it, race it, or get stuck in traffic anyway I like, and stop worrying so much. I learn nothing but a huge question mark in the face.

Sincerely thanks for replies in advance,

the 1 series does not have enough space in the instrument cluster to include temp gauges.

.. assume your car runs hot. it IS running hot. you can remove your plastic engine cover + insulation underneath and use a good quality 5w40 oil like liqui moly to help combat temps. always drive conservatively before parking or at least crank the heater up for a couple minutes so the electric water pump isnt circulating boiling hot coolant when the engine is shut off.

They could at least write the oil temperature as a number along with the other information you can scroll through at the bottom of the instrument panel.

I am more worried about not knowing when the oil is warm enough before track sessions.

if you press and hold the instrument cluster button while the car is running you should be able to pull up a sub menu. you can find on youtube how to unlock it (using a code through the vin) and you can then access coolant temperatures. if this is not possible for your model, a good 20 minute drive will ensure that your oil is up to temp. if it is warm outside I'm sure 10 minutes will be enough but if you keep the general rule as 20 min warmup before track time you'll be just fine.

I know about the hidden menu, but it is quite a lot of work to set it up every track stint, so I usually don't. And the 20 minutes is not really a reliable rule. I drive a long time to the track area, and then the car cools down before the first time I go onto the actual track. It would have been a lot more convenient with some sort of temperature indicator.

of course it would be helpful. if the instrument cluster is not convenient, then your only choice is by getting some sort of aftermarket gauges which you can put into the cup holder, etc. in the meantime I would always do a quick warm up run for 10 minutes before really starting to redline it on the track.

My girlfriends old car had no temp gauge and just a warning light, I was driving down the motorway and the light came on,I pulled up immediately and shut the engine down. Too late the cylinder head was shot, I was not happy about this and had I seen a needle rising could have avoided a large repair bill.

sorry to hear! thats a very shitty situation. a coolant temp gauge is usually not very accurate and could potentially not budge even with a 20 degree difference in coolant temps, but it would still be more helpful then no gauge at all!

As much as I would like to have more gauges, for instance in the sport displays of the idrive (dont understand why they just dont add a couple of them as there is plenty of room there) , I must admit the car is so heavily monitored that I doubt it would fail for temperature reasons before going to a safe stop via warnings and reduced power.

The problem is that after 10 minutes of track driving, the tyres are already getting too warm, so I need to run frequent and short track stints. The exception is trackdays on ice, where the tyres never overheat, and I could drive until the car is out of fuel! :-)
