Changing the oil in my 1988 RX-7 Convertible, I didn't notice that the O-ring/gasket didn't come off with the oil filter. When I put the new oil filter on, it had double O-rings which blew 6 qts of oil all over the engine and driveway as soon as I started it. I had to wait a while for a buddy to bring replacement oil but that was okay because I had a big stupid oily mess to clean up.

I used to own a '79 Chevy Monte Carlo that you had to remove the left front wheel in order to get to the rear spark plug. I didn't have a long enough extension and had to go in sort of offset the get the wrench on it. First I broke the upper part of the plug off and then I rounded the nut part. So I was stuck with a plug I couldn't remove and couldn't reattach. Luckily my best friend at the time was an accomplished mechanic and he came over with the tools I needed to get the plug out. That was the last time I attempted a tune up myself.

I was not cut out for auto mechanics.

2006. I grabbed the arm of my friend who was racing his Mustang causing us to hit the curb at about 60ish mph. Blew out both tires instantly. I told him I didnt want to be in the car while he was racing another car before he floored it.

Could have been much worse. Thankfully that was all the damage. Still friends amazingly.

Wow, a guy racing a mustang? nothing new there

Own story:

In my Dodge Ram. Off road. Had it in 2WD for more fun of course. Coming around a corner, letting the rear end loose as trucks tend to do. (I was 16 when this happened btw, 3 months after getting license). Truck decides it wants to be one with the trees on the other side of the road, so it drifts all the way around and into some trees. $500 in damage but I repaired that myself. Had to take it to the dealer (worst mistake out of all this) and they insisted on a transmission and differential fluid flush, plus a couple other things. $1500 later for $300 worth of work I could have done myself.

One of my friends traded his truck for an 06 Pontiac GTO, fully built 700hp nitrous car. 22.5 hours later, he decides to race someone in the rain. 23 hours later, the car is totaled. Shortest ownership of a vehicle I've ever known.

My therapist said I should not talk about it.

I have had 4 different cars catch fire. Usually my own fault.

'70 Cougar, 351 Cleveland. Driving home Friday night from college, dash lights don't work, but the roar of the cat told me we were doing about 100. Girl I went to school with in the passenger seat. We were chatting along just fine when suddenly some granny is doing maybe 60 in the left lane in front of me.
Swerve into center median dirt, fly past granny without over-correction, then back onto the road.
Didn't hear another WORD from girl in the passenger seat until she said "thanks" when I dropped her off.

I haven't done an oil change myself since my mishap either. I'll stick to just cleaning and detailing my cars and leave the engine work to people who are better at it than me.

Driving a company truck, that runs on natural gas. I had a supply regulator failure while going 110km/h on a steep incline. The truck stalled entirely, could not start it from drive, or neutral. In a bit of frantic reaction and frustration I dumped it from Drive to Park while approaching a shoulder, which ensued a machine gun like sound "BAADATATATATATATATATATATA"en I was then able to start the truck, however it would not leave Park... Ended up needing a tow truck. Whoops!

Someone just started a threat talking about possible fraud with the same company? At least it has the same name...

Lups's checklist:

Count the seatbelts.

If you love something because they are subtle, don't buy it in yellow.

If you think you can prevent your life from your new toy, think again.

If you think you finally are a grown up, go through the list above and check if the last time around actually taught you anything.

I'm the biggest fucking idiot when cars are involved there is. Every time I come up with something new and every time it takes about 6 months for me to accept it. My list of mistakes is so long I won't even try to list them better.

Two most memorable mishaps for me were:
1) Had a 1967 Camaro in 1975. Car was an odd optioned car, drum brakes no power steering no radio or carpet(plastic mats) but had a 283 2 barrel and 4 speed. We assumed it had been used to bracket race as the rear clip was full of rubber everywhere underneath. Was in the middle of a block doing about 20 mph saw a girl I liked jammed it back in first and romped on it just lit up the rear tires for maybe 25 feet then hooked up and sent me right into a wooden telephone pole, totaled the car and lost any chance with said girl.
2) Drunk at Jet ski world finals in Havasu mid 80's stole a golf cart rolled it down an embankment and straight in the lake, Did not realize where we were, left the golf cart, Come back in the morning and realize where we rolled was right smack in the middle of the tech inspection area. Need less to say races were delayed due to some azz hat's behavior.

Here are a few doosies. Moral of the story here is, never follow a truck too closely. The driver may be an idiot.

Taking my Mazda 3 to a dealership for an oil change and having them forget to put oil back in before handing me the keys. 10 minutes later engine was toast and cost them 12M to fix under warranty with a new engine coming from Japan.

Garage List
2010 135i Coupe  [5.26]
Fell asleep on the highway in my Exige and hit a guardrail going about 70mph. Luckily it was about 3am and nobody else was on the road. $25k insurance claim.

I had an Altima SE-R at the same time as the Lotus. I was pulling into a shopping center parking lot (had never been there before) that had a weird shaped entrance with concrete curbs all over the place. As I rounded the curve the sun got in my eyes and I nailed one of the curbs. I actually went clear over it. The noise it made sounded like I just totalled the car but when I got out, I was stunned to see no damage to the car. I found out a few months later, when getting new tires, that I cracked a wheel.

My first experience with diesel was as a dumbass buck private on my first tour in Korea. I was assigned as a Jeep driver. First time I went to put fuel in it, I drove up to the fuel tank (not really a pump, but a large tank with a fueling hose) and promptly filled the gasoline powered Jeep with diesel. That went over well.

I was adding fluids to my x-wife's car. I had a brake fluid and engine oil containers with me. I checked the engine oil and added as it needed. Then I checked the brake fluid and decided to add some as it was little low. I put engine oil into brake fluid reservoir. Guess what happened after driving a short distance??? Engine oil damaged the brake system and it stopped working. The entire brake system was needed to be replaced
